three ten to you will actually like it.

so dan's been wanting to see this western movie for months. i, on the other hand, haven't really been in the know or cared to be (at first sight of the dvd, i was majorly disappointed that brad pitt wasn't even in this movie. didn't he star in some western recently?) anyway, i assumed this was another one of those bang, bang you're dead meat type movies. and i don't know about you, but i'm so done with those; car chases, swat teams, guns and really cool camera angles of people getting shot at. am not one who finds joy in guns and guts.

but being the birthday boy, dan got to choose whatever his heart hoped for at the local video shop. yeah, we're old school. we rarely go to movies in the theater and are not hooked up to any fancy flix in your mailbox type deal. (which may have to be rectified come our move out yonder.)

all this to say, this movie is really good. i was honestly swept away and surprisingly pleased with 3:10 to Yuma. seriously, russell crow and christian bale rock the western movie set. (a tad shocking that in today's cinema efforts, every western movie still looks and feels like a set. i was not fooled. it must be the easiest set to make too; all wooden boards and slats and swinging doors.) even still, the acting was superb and the story intense. although frustrating, the whole time i was telling the tv to 'just shoot him. right now. just shoot him.' but then again, that wouldn't have made a very good movie if they just shot ben wade in the second scene.

as per usual, after the movie we had to research the boys to see what else they are in. and come to find out, darling devilish charlie was in x-men. charlie was not only a sharp shooter, but one sharp dresser too. i want a jacket like his.

images.

on another thrilling note, dan recently discovered that christian bale was the star in Newsies. (i never knew he has been so musically and theatrically deprived to have never seen Newsies.) yes, of course he was, i say, whipping out my memorized rendition of Sante Fe..

so, next week, Newsies. nope, there's nothing wrong with a gaggle of guys on the screen every weekend.

Newsie AND Swing Kids, I think. And Batman. And a couple of other testosterone flicks I don't watch. BTW: there is a Blockbuster in town! But, we prefer the by-mail thing. It's butt-kickin cold here!

Hey that one with Brad Pitt is the Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Love 3:10 to Yuma as well!

the BF and I just watched this last weekend. i've been in love with Christian Bale since Little Women (Laurie!) and he almost always puts out solidly good flicks. and i was really impressed by this too, mainly because it had so much heart and it was one of so few movies where i had no real idea how it was going to end. ack! so good.

ps one of my friends was Charlie for Halloween. his girlfriend MADE the costume and it was completely spot-on. he even looks like Charlie facially. i don't know if this link will work but try it and see how great it was: http://truman.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31733458&op=1&o=all&view=all&subj=36101145&id=36102780

Very good movie... did you watch the special features that showed them building the set out in the middle of the desert? I thought it was well done. I wasn't looking forward to watching it, but was pleasantly surprised.

Don't forget to consider your local library as a source for movies. I just got 3:10 to Yuma from my library. I haven't paid to rent a movie in YEARS!

Santa Fe, are you there? I can't spend my whole life waiting...

Oh, yes, I am ALL ABOUT THE NEWSIES. Did you know Gene Kelly did the choreography for that movie? It just has an old-fashioned musical feel to it, even with a cast full of little boys. LOVE it. One of my all-time favs.

Josh is also singing the praises of 310. I'll be watching it now thanks to you!

Dave and I love renting movies but often leave the movie store empty handed, because we see nothing that interests us. Not next time, thanks to you!

Newsies and Little Women. Yum!

Yuma. Yuk...I am sorry, I would be asleep on the couch in 2 minutes. If Johnny Depp and Pirates 3 could not keep me awake, I don't even think C. Bale could help.

Hooray for Dan getting a birthday movie and intro to musicals in one week!!!

i love - read LOVE 3:10 to Yuma, but i was along the same lines as you at first. while i'm married to a man that wanted to name our child clark kent (or jack daniel) for that matter - i thought, great, another Marvel...comic book...super hero...

but no, i was suprised at the story line behind the movie. and loved it all!

I was also delightfully surprised by 3:10, but I do love Christian Bale. Laurie in Little Women, yes, please!

and newsies is a CLASSIC!

:::breaks into song::: "we need a good assasination, we need an earthquake or a war..."

This is one of the rarities we payed the bucks to see in the theater. Charlie was as excellent villain huh?!
You reminded me to put Newsies on my blockbuster queue. thanks

I loved 3:10! I cried, even though I knew what to expect from a western! Your blog is very inspiring!

I love the revival (and refusal to die) of the western genre. I really want to see No Country For Old Men (All the critics are raving) but I'm afraid of the violence. I'm trying to gear myself up!

Western fans: the Lonesome Dove miniseries is fantastic, a good choice for a long lazy Sunday afternoon. As for Mr. Bale, well, I've always hated Jo just a teensy bit in my heart for refusing him.

Lol, that's funny - I remember noting that jacket from the trailers!

Thanks for the review. I remember being intrigued by it when it first came out, although not intrigued enough to make it to the theatres. Intrigued enough to make it to the rental store, yes.

yay!
thanks, marta- this review is exactly what I needed to hear: someone trustworthy telling me that this movie is worth my watching. Now we have a reason to go to the video store... aka the gas station! (because that truly is our only rental resource in this tiny town)

and yay for newsies too- seize the day!
