a manly piece of chocolate cake
this chocolate cake is oh so simple but tastes oh so divine. make it tonight as a trial run. and then make another pan for sunday night supper to say happy father's day. like they say, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. just don't forget to pick up the sour cream at the market. it's the secret ingredient in this delicious dessert.
it's true, usually i attempt something much more fantastical than a 9x13 flat frosted concoction. i often gravitate towards the tricky 3 layer cake or exquisitely decorated cupcakes or freshly picked berry cobbler, something that seems extraordinary. something my guests may have never tasted before. but under my influence, the cakes usually fall flat, the cupcakes never look like the photograph in the cookbook and the cobbler looks like a berry bloody mess once you add the must-have ice cream.
therefore, i needed a new go-to. this chocolate cake is no fuss, but still lots of fun. spray some pam in a 9x13 pan, pour in the batter, cool and frost, sprinkle it up if you want, throw some foil over your pyrex and voila, you are the queen of the kitchen. no need to find a dainty cake stand, no need to cut any parchment paper to size, no need to pull out the frosting bag with it's swirly tips, no need to pull out any curse words either, and no need to wonder how high to fill the cupcake papers. this bad boy comes out nice and neat, flat and sweet, a delicious treat each and every time. it's the cake you'd be devouring if you were on the set of the Wonder Years. old fashioned and predictable (like your father himself). believe me, if you could mulch together all of your father's sweaty satisfaction after a full saturday of washing the car, mowing the lawn on the diagonal and fixing the sprinkler your mom ran over two weeks ago into a purely perfect dessert, this one would be it.
serve it up and slice the pieces big. it's amazing with a glass of cold milk. yeah, go all out; make it 2%. if your father is anything like mine (and my father-in-law and my grandpas too), he'll appreciate the real stuff.

Thanks for the recipe, I will try it some day. Sounds delicious!
It is so funny to see completely white eggs. I hope there will be the natural brown ones for some time in the shops in my country.
My favorite phrase is "old fashioned and predictable - just like your dad." You write so well, chica.
And the cake? Sounds DELISH. Must get some sour cream and give it a go.
sounds like heaven!
This sounds like a magic cake, as in, lift up the foil in the morning and voila! It disappeared during the night!
mmmmmmmmmmmm chocolate.
i am going to make this!! Thanks for the suggestion for fathers day! :) my dad will LOVE it!
thanks so much for posting this, i woke up dreaming of this cake. i'm making it on saturday (for sunday) or on sunday. yum. you are the best.
This will definitely be baked in our house this weekend. But, being 8 months pregnant, you gave me such a chocolate craving that I had to scour my cupboards for a quick fix. A handful of semi-sweet morsels will have to do!
thanks for the dad's day reminder. have had a hectic. better get crackin'. got two dads to celebrate. and big act to follow after mom's day.
That sounds amazing! My hubby hates dry cakes, so I usually do some brownies with ice cream or a jello cake as well. I'll have to give this a try!
