beauty tips 01

it's true, i have a bit of a fetish with all things glitz and glamour. which means, i'm thrilled to start up another panel series this month, all about beauty. i know of so many true beauties and fashionistas, i decided to create a panel of pretties who i deem as experts on the subject. (i may be sharing my own tips as well, because i don't know if i can help it.) i know these ladies have overflowing makeup drawers and bottles of scented lather lined up on their tubs but really, none of them need a stitch of it. they are all gorgeous as is. believe you me. but makeup and fashion are pure fun and that's all we girls want. lets indulge while they divulge.

KELLY P. My beauty secret is to splurge on something that you love. Maybe you have to save up a bit or budget in other areas, but if you buy that one piece of clothing that you absolutely love then you will feel so beautiful. I used to spend money on many cheap things that I only felt lukewarm about wearing. But once I treated myself to a piece of clothing that I couldn't leave the store without it changed my life. Putting those items on instantly make me feel pretty, positive, and put-together.

ALANA S. My beauty secret is a touch of bronzer. A little dab on my cheeks, forehead and/or neck. The little boost of color makes me feel less drab in the winter and sun-kissed in the summer. A friend of mine, who is a model, says she will apply some to her cheeks instead of blush and then a thin application of aloe vera for a little glow in the summer.

SUMMER H. go with what your mom gave you. play up the naturalness. be healthy. smile without ceasing. try new styles. be fearless. and paint your nails.. it can change your world.

JAMIE ANNE C. Sunscreen : minimum SPF 15 EVERY single day! / Hydration: even if I have to flavor the water with Crystal Light or a lemon / Attitude: keeping myself fresh, fun and a little bit fancy

ELIZABETH W. I have two top beauty secrets. #1. the key to looking beautiful is glowing skin. Exfoliate like a crazy woman; I wash my face at the beginning of my shower, at the end of my shower, I gently rub the pads of my fingers all over my face. Any dead skin sitting on the surface usually sloughs off this way, using just my fingertips. Afterwards, I apply an oil-free moisturizer while my face is still a bit damp. After applying foundation and cover up, I set my makeup with a translucent powder and then dust a shimmer onto my cheekbones, temples, and the bridge of my nose. (Laura Mercier has an amazing one that I swear by.)

#2. I always wear more eye makeup than I think I need. Always. And usually the days when I think I've gone overboard are the days I get the most compliments on my makeup. I know this probably sounds like terrible advice to most people, but I always urge my girlfriends to try it and then check themselves out in a different mirror, away from the bright lights of your bathroom sink. Most of them begrudgingly admit that I'm a genius.

COURTNEY M. while i'm a big believer in the fact that your inner attitude profoundly affects your outer appearance, i'm going to stick to the material things for now. i'd say the biggest "secret" is maintaining the little things. keeping my hair touched up and trimmed, nails tidy and manicured, tidy eyebrows and shaved legs. not to say that i'm always the best at doing that, but keeping those things maintained makes me feel pretty, which is a great confidence-booster. which, in turn, reflects on the inner/outer beauty thing. when i was little and was dressed up for a party, my mom would always remind me that it's whether i felt pretty on the inside that counts. she still says it to me, at 26!

ALLISON C. Sleep, always sleep. If I don't get enough, there's no amount of make-up that can cover up the fact that I haven't slept! I need eight hours a night for that dewy faced look. (Which is harder and harder to come by!)

ERICA E. Apply lotion, apply lotion, apply lotion!! I wash my face at night and apply lots of lotion. As soon as I wake up, I splash my face with water and then apply lotion. Before I put on makeup, I apply lotion. Well hydrated skin makes you look younger, protects you from getting too many rays (if it contains a spf) and depending on what lotion you use, can fight off pimples too!

EMILY Y. Beauty secret? I don't think I have any of those, but here is something I do everyday. I put lotion under my eyes and add a powder foundation while the lotion is still soaking in. This way my foundation doesn't look like liquid cake on my face, and I feel like it is a more natural way to conceal discoloration.

HANNAH C. I have always wanted to have a beautiful, white, toothy, hollywood smile like my mom's and sister's. Sadly, I didn't get their teeth and I really can't change that without spending mega bucks. However, I CAN make my teeth nice and white. You can go to the dentist and get a quick zap of white, but it you are like me and always looking for a deal, a home-whitening kit will give you similar results if you have a little more time. Crest Whitestrips Premium are definitely the best home-kit. Be prepared for a little sensitivity, but as my mom always said when brushing my tangled hair, "Beauty is pain." ha ha!

SARAH H. Definitely not washing my hair everyday! It has helped my hair SO much. It is healthier, shinier, stronger. I try to wash my hair as little as possible (like twice a week if I can, gross I know!). And of those times, I try to only blow dry it once a week, usually on Saturday or Sunday.

CHELSEY B.
My top secret beauty secret is NOT washing off my mascara. I personally think my lashes look better when I sleep in my mascara and re-apply over the top of what is left from the day before. I know it sounds a little crazy but my lashes look thicker and fuller when my mascara is layered, you know when your hair looks better on the second day because it's dirty? Same thing with the lashes! I often get asked if my lashes are real, so I think it's workin' for me!

TARYN L. i think that my best beauty secret it to be confident. the most beautiful people i know are always kind, with kind eyes, big smiles, they are people you can laugh with and cry with; people you can truly be yourself with. they never judge, just understand.

MARTA: my three favorite beauty secrets are #1. my daily habit; i heat my eyelash curler with a blowdryer for 10 seconds before curling to help my lashes stay girly curly all day. #2. i love to soak in a bubble bath; it hydrates my skin, relaxes my mind and softens my feet. add a bit of baby oil or epson salt, an inexpensive way to get smooth skin. #3. smile like you mean it; be confident, don't fidget, be happy with who you are. (once i leave my house, i carry lipgloss and a big smile, hoping that will distract everyone from seeing all my flaws.)

thank you, panelists. now let me know your top beauty secret.. tune in next week; these experts reveal their top five favorite products.

I love your panel discussions! And this particular topic I'm obsessed about so it was really fun to read.

I hope you don't mind if I share a tip that has transformed my life :) If you don't want to wash your hair every day (or even every other day) just apply a small amount of baby powder to the roots of your hair. It will instantly look and feel like you washed your hair!

Love the list! Needed the reminder to pay attention to the little things - which takes away that worry when in public (umm..did I shave close enough? don't stand in sunlight! eek!)

And I like the tip about wearing more eye makeup than you think you need. I'll try it!!

My tip is drinking enough water. When I don't drink enough, my skin is less soft, I get dehydrated, get hungry more often, get lethargic and/or cranky - and may end up with a headache. (you CAN drink too much water. there's an actual danger of that... so balance is key.)

Apart from the powders, the lotions, the gels and the glosses, my secret is to look people right in the eyes when you're talking with or listening to them. Making that connection makes people think you're beautiful, even when you haven't shaved your legs or you woke up with yet another wrinkle.

I'm all for natural beauty, but it takes work.
Gotta say my favorite thing is to do a hair-hydrating masque once a month to keep my fly-aways and tweekers under control.

I revel in beauty tips! I could read them all day! They make me feel beautiful and I start imagining how gorgeous I'll be when I try them all.

My tip is: Do all you can to look good before you leave the house, and then forget yourself and try to make others feel comfortable and confident.

(This tip is easier if you are naturally pretty, or young. Because if you're naturally normal or old you tend to have poppy seeds in your teeth after lunch and you need to pay more attention to yourself.)

I'm glad you mentioned confidence. It is so often underestimated that detail is to someone's aura.

Awesome tips! Such good timing for the upcoming summer.

My husband works for L'oreal which owns SO MANY brands of beauty products. I am lucky because I get to enjoy the perks of his working there. Because I have so many products in my reach, I have learned one thing: change every couple of days what you are putting on your skin, your face in particular. Just like your hair products, it is a good idea to switch often.

I totally agree with Allison C's tip on sleep. I need my sleep too! But I always get a dewy look from the Arbonne products I use, Arbonne is incrediable and I can't live without it!
