family snapshot and a family recipe

as i wandered around my iphoto archives looking for something that resembled rice pudding, i discovered this classic shot (circa early 1980s) of my siblings and me (in stroller) strolling the same Temple Square plaza we took benji to this past weekend. i for one, love when things come full circle. landing in my lap at the perfect moment. notice how the three big kids, gabi, josh and micah all have polaroid cameras strung around their necks and seem to be snapping tangible shots for everyone to hold onto.

in the spirit of vintage classics and my happy childhood, i give you my mom's famous rice pudding recipe. once upon a time, she and her pot of pudding was featured in the newspaper! it's that good. since this pudding is baked in the oven, it comes out thick and custardy, like rice pudding ought to be. old fashioned and delisch. in fact, you'll wish jo march could be sitting down next to you while you devour it. i hope you treasure it like i do. please print it out on thin yellowed paper with dark creases down the middle from being folded up in a recipe box for a hundred years with fading cursive only recognizable to you. here's to my favorite traditional dish for christmas eve.

old-fashioned rice pudding
from the christmas kitchen of marty halverson

3 cups cooked White Rice
6 Eggs, beaten lightly
3/4 cup Sugar
1 tsp. Nutmeg
1 tsp. Cinnamon
1 tsp. Vanilla
1/4 cup Honey
1 cup Cream (Heavy or Whipping)
2 cups Milk

Cook the rice according to instructions, 1 1/2 cups of raw rice gives you approximately 3 cups cooked. Mix ingredients together in a large bowl, stirring with a wooden spoon until the rice is well combined and coated. Bake in a greased 2-quart casserole dish at 325° for 45 minutes. Scoop into ramekins and serve warm with cream. *Be sure to hide an almond in one of the individual servings to see who gets a prize. Enjoy.

The photo is timeless and priceless. I noticed the cameras before I started reading your post, because I do love to take me some photos. And, your Mama's rice pudding is on the menu for tomorrow evening when my oldest (18) comes home from spending the night with Oma. He loves rice pudding, and so do I. My husband and 2 daughters (4,6) are not so crazy about it, but Zach and I could finish it off by ourselves, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing this wonderful memory. And, Merry Christmas, too.

You are the best. I just wrote down "find rice pudding recipe" on my to do's. Now I don't have to spend the precious minutes narrowing down the hundreds I'd find. I trust one from your family.

Merry Christmas Week!

Yum, rice pudding! I am excited for a new treat now. My visiting teacher just sent me a recipe for pumpkin cheese bread (cream cheese) & it is quite possibly the best bread I've ever eaten. In life. So I'm excited to make two new recipes now!

I just wanted to say I love the 80s-style clothing. I have loads of pictures of my brothers & me & my little baby sister, all dolled up with horrid neon stripes & other non-matching outfits. Sometimes I can't believe the 80s are back; sometimes I love it.

Now done with my rant.

Have a great weekend! I'm excited to see what Benji does with his presents/wrapping. It's always fun for me to see little kids discover the wonder of Christmas morning, and I have a new niece to experience it with this year. So excited.

In the family picture, you look just like little Benji in the umbrella stroller. I also love the rainbow seat belt in the stroller, so 80s. And, although the younger generation doesn't yet appreciate the taste and/or texture of rice pudding, I'm tempted to make it just for me and Sco. It's sooooo good!

I have a special place in my heart for rice pudding. I really do. When I can't trek down to Soho to get my very favorite, I think I'll give this a try. Yum.

Notice my different shirt under that cute outfit of mine. The matching shirt's sleeves were "too tight!" Luckily Amy was around to make it look as it should. Now days, I don't know if I'd be so patient with girls. Pretty sure I've said the words, "Chels, It's okay, it'll feel better in a little while. Just wear it."
Here's to being a listening parent today, thanks for the reminder!

Have you ever noticed how the greenery in older photos look...greener? It seems that way in every older picture I look at... maybe I'm just crazy.
