Driving around looking at Christmas lights when the family gets together and hearing the same Christmas CD (and only Christmas CD) my mom has and brings out every year.

My favorite Christmastime tradition is our annual Christmas treasure hunt. The last present for every child is wrapped up & placed in obscure place in or around the house, and my dad preps the clues. It wasn't unusual to see us in our bathrobes, running in & out of the house on Christmas morning. (Our neighbors would often call & make sure we were all right, until they knew us better.) :)

Now that I'm married, my husband's family celebrates Christmas Eve by having a traditional Jewish feast, lighting candles & reading scriptures. (His mom has Jewish heritage & honors it.) Then we go out in a big van & look at tacky lights & my father in law sings all the wrong words to popular Christmas songs, and we laugh the whole way. It's tons of fun.

Sorry for the long post, but I love Christmastime & traditions! :)

my favorite tradition is coloring luminaries with my family on christmas eve. we color then fill the white paper bags, then line the front walk and sidewalk of our house with them. a lighted candle is placed in each luminary to (hopefully) burn all night long. come christmas morning, whoever has a luminary still lit is the winner.
now that we are all grown, we still color luminaries. it's like we're kids again, sitting around the counter with our crayons and markers. I love it!

sherry said...

Katie, your luminaries sounds lovely. I can envision the delight they bring. I might have to try that with my kiddos.

Our family tradition is only a couple of years old, but one that we will carry on for years I'm sure. Each day, from December 1st through the 24th [minus a few days for special Christmas events], the kiddos make an ornament. They are simple in nature right now as they are five and seven years old. But, they are looooooooovely and a precious treasure.

Love the chair calendar -- too cool. I want each of those chairs, lifesize, for my house.

Hm ... My favorite tradition is unpacking everything and hanging all the decorations. I love the excitement.

It's a Slovak tradition. Buying a live carp from the market. Letting it swim in your bathtub on Christmas day, and then cooking it up for Christmas Eve dinner.

My favorite holiday tradition is going to midnight mass on Christmas eve. Even as a kid, I loved staying up that late to go!

my mom would always put on the neil diamond christmas album right after thanksgiving. i was resistant at first but then grew to love it. now i do it in my own home.

Mary said...

i love putting up all of the decorations the 2 days after thanksgiving (no crazy black fridays for this girl). it sets the mood for the entire month and we can do it as a family. i love it!

Reading the Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve as a family (a pop-up book of course!)

History of furniture and architecture meets calendar. Love it!

Decorating our Christmas tree, all by myself. I have a set of ornaments given to me by a homeless man I befriended in DC about five years ago. He gave them to me in May, but they couldn't embody the spirit of Christmas anymore. I love putting all the other decorations on the tree, then taking them time to lovingly place each of those special ornaments and reflect on the blessing of reaching out to others.

My favorite Christmas tradition is that my family opens our gifts on Christmas morning and everyone has to be there to do so...even my Uncle Bill who sleeps LATE. As a child, this was a true test of patience. Now as an adult, I totally appreciate sleeping past 7:00 a.m....but I also remember how even an hour seemed like an eternity when you are a kid on Christmas morning, so I get up early.

Really great calender--LOVE!

Mel said...

Growing up we always read the Christmas story from the Bible on Christmas morning before opening the gifts. My husband and I have continued that tradition with our 8 and 10-year-old. It helps us remember why we are celebrating Christmas.

as i thought about it, i realized that all of my favorite christmastime traditions center around food. is that bad? prime rib on christmas, caramel pull-aparts for breakfast christmas morning, the cookies made throughout the season. of course, all of these foods are special as they are shared with family and friends... my true favorite tradition.

Another beautiful calendar!

One of my favorite traditions is the tree. I love decorating it with my husband and sons and I love what the white lights do to the ambience of our family room. I insist on leaving the lights on 24 hrs, regardless of the fire hazard. And I love the Martha Stewart fake tree that I finally splurged on a couple years ago.

lindsey said...

Ooo I would love this for my desk!

One of my new fave traditions is my stuffed stocking exchange with my Husband. We're newly married and I love that we can make fun little traditions mean so much more.

hanging the stockings!!

Lena said...

That is a cute calendar and would look fun on my husband's serious desk at work.
Growing up, we didn't have many traditions. The one thing that always happened, and I will always thank my mom for it, was stockings for Saint Nicholas. I was always excited for it and happy for something different.

Every Year on Christmas Eve we have "dinner in the stable" - my mom makes a big dinner consisting of things that everyone who was there on the first Christmas would have eaten - meatballs and hummus for the wisemen, pita for the shepherds, pasta with pesto sauce (looks like hay) for the animals, even warm milk with honey for what baby Jesus would have had! It sounds a little weird but it has been my favorite thing ever! And after we eat we always go sledding in our backyard.

Hi Marta! I would love to win this calendar for my new office! Favorite Christmas tradition...when my brother and I were younger my parents used to give us our presents from Santa by placing them above our heads while we were sleeping. We would wake up and look on top of the pillow and there it was! For the longest time I believed this to be the tradition and didn't fully understand the whole running to the Christmas tree. I just thought those presents were from people you knew, but not Santa. =D

going over to my grandparents house on christmas eve with the whole family. eating, reading the christmas story, & opening stockings. we have been doing it for as long as i can remember...

We've been eating the same meal on Christmas Eve in our family for over 150 years. We have a traditional Swedish dish called dup. We eat rice pudding for dessert, but before we can dig in, we have to recite poems, made up on the spot, no pens, no paper. This is something that has become more dear to me as the years go by. I love thinking of my whole family, all over the country (the world, really) participating in something my great grandparents started in Sweden so long ago.

Right now it's flying home to see my family. Living so far away can be unbearable at times and Christmas is the time of year where I get a week filled with my family and loved ones!

when we were little, my sister & i used to sing & play christmas carols on the piano that sat directly under our parents' bedroom until they woke up and came downstairs. we would have (bad) coffee brewing and bowls of cheerios for them for breakfast.

since we've grown, we've taught our younger cousins to do it when everyone stays over on christmas eve!

My favourite tradition is getting together with all my sisters, brother-in-law, and the babies at my parents' home on Christmas Eve after the Christmas Eve Service. We eat, open stockings, exchange gifts, and sing together. Then mum sends us all home with enough ham to make our own traditional Canadian breakfast - "Wifesaver." It really is a wife-saver. Easiest Christmas morning breakfast ever. But... we only get to eat it once a year. So yummy.

Fave tradition is sleeping over at my parents house on Christmas Eve and waking up to mini boxes of cereal.

I love putting up the tree & getting out all our Christmas music the day after Thanksgiving. My other favorite part of Christmas is seeing all the extended family we don't see any other time of year. I have tons of cousins & now we all have our own kids - it's a riotous mess, but I love it.

Hi marta! this is a new tradition for me since being married, but my husband's family has a special ornament for each person that they put up on christmas eve and they each bear their testimonies of the Savior. I love that! It really centers us on the meaning of the season, and gives a family forum for true feelings about the gospel.

Hello Sweet Marta -

Oh my! Favorite Tradition? It must be O's Winter Festival - especially taking O & E to the pinata store to choose the pinata. It was a treasure to see them walking out hand in hand after having selected their pinata and hearing O say to E, "No one is luckier than we are, because we have a pink unicorn pinata." Can't wait to see B at this year's festival!

Happy Christmas Sweet Marta!

Love - M
