my unbirthday boy
oh my boy in stripes. how i love you. today you are exactly eighteen months. you're such a big boy, i can hardly believe it. you have filled my heart up with happiness so entirely i can only wonder how i will feel when you turn eighteen years old. how can such a little person have such a big effect in such a little amount of time? you are our little bit of wild joy. tromping around this place as though it were your castle. you still love the salad spinner and the nesting pots and pans. you are always so pleasant and darling. splashing at the pool, stomping on the snow, climbing the stairs, swaying to music, eating two cookies at once are all things you have mastered. you look like one very big boy when i open up a fruit snacks pouch and you dig your little fingers in for a treat. lately you've been favoring your left hand which takes your stock way up with oma and opa (both left handers). your mini tantrums are fleeting and i hope they stay that way. a dum dum lollipop seems to please you in the most dire of circumstances e.g. the long checkout line at Target when i assume the right to stretch the hour before naptime.
you are a climbing little monkey, ever curious, ever willing to help out. if only you could climb into the kitchen aid and fully inspect it. as you have done with the dishwasher. you love anything that rotates and seem enamored with your light up toy aquarium. and you know what a fishy says. we could not be more proud. you wave your arms wildly to wash that spider out and then raise your arms up with out came the sun. i will sing it forevermore to see you light up like you do.
you are growing and learning every day. your favorite word is yep. even when i'm talking to someone on the phone. you hear me ask a question and you chime in with a big yep. i'm proud of your lets do it attitude, my boy. you can do big things like reach for the alphabet cookies on the counter, recognize elmo and smile cheerfully, ride your tiny firetruck, toddle around to do your self-appointed tasks and help fold the clothes with mama. i am amazed you know what bathtime means or when i say lets go read a story or even lets do the wash (laundry is in your top five). you hop up on your Benjamin Chair when it's time for shoes and socks. then you wait by the door as i try your patience while grabbing my keys and purse. i love the way you pick a book (very selective these days) and back up until you've reached my lap. you know how to fold your arms for prayers and say hot and blow on your warm spaghetti noodles. i am fascinated at your excitement for putting things in and out of their containers. (you most certainly know the difference between the square shape vs. the triangle shape.) i cannot yet imagine you and i having a discussion deciphering colors but i know the time will come and so shortly too. you will be big and know your yellow from your blue. which amazes me all at once.
you are my miracle that i get to watch daily. a little scientist exploring our little world. the world i create for you. which, to me, is equally a huge responsibility and an endless delight. those pudgy hands buzzing from textures, to toys, to orange slices to around my neck. sometimes as i rock you and pat your back before bed, your little hand reaches around and pats mine too.
and there it is. a little i love you.
oh to be your mama, it's the best thing there is.

Happy 18 months. Yay for Nursery.
Cute words for a cute boy.
Happy unbirthday to little Benji.
It never stops being the best thing there is. My oldest son is 17 and I still cannot believe I get to be his Mom. I love him (and his two younger brothers) with all my heart. Oh, I love to see them in stripes, too!
"yep" I love it! Happy 18 months!
So so sweet. Love your delightful words.
Happy 18 months Benji boy! Little Guy will love having his little buddy in nursery.
Marta, you are the cutest mom and are so good at putting your feelings into words. Such a sweet post!
I'm not usually "into" other people's kids but I think Benji bear is the cutest. He has the most adorable little face and I love the relationship the two of you have.
I remember when it was just me and Luke and I was a little sad to bring another child into the mix because I so loved just having the two of us be buddies. But of course, that changes and only gets better with every child.
happy 18 months Benji bear!
Love this, marta! You have such a way with words. Happy eighteen months to you and benji!
Thanks for sharing such sweet thoughts. My littlest one is just a month older than Benji. It's so fun to read your feelings, as they echo my own.
little buddy boys are the bestest.
wish i could express it all as well as you do!
Wow! It’s amazing how we know our child’s every little movement, every little quirk, sound etc.! I love the way you captured how you adore your little boy! It’s completely utterly unconditional love and I totally get you! I have two little girls and they are my joy, my life and my all!

Kids are the best. Even when they're loading their own dishwashers you still love them to pieces.
I love those dark eyes! You are such a sweet mommy.
Work from home India
I think he needs a zhou zhou pet.
Love that cutie!!
wondrous, marta. being a mom has never sounded better. has he really grown up so much? he's talking! (i can't even imagine how cute that 'yep' is sounding) and he's making decisions and remembering people and things and watching out for himself on those hot noodles.. wow. what an awesome thing it must be to communicate and teach and hang out with your own son. i love hearing the miracle that it is (this word fits so perfectly)- and i love that you love it so much!
SO touching. Motherhood is such joy. Mine are teens and adults now. thank you for letting me relive the past through your words
