ribbon flip flop fever / kids craft

before i dive into the weekend slideshow, i wanted to debut the craft we (the activity day girls and i) made in honor of mother's day. the simple gift idea came together in a flash. i dreamt it up in the aisle of michael's craft store. we were going to paint birdhouses or mod podge terra cotta pots, but the flip flops were staring up at me, only $2 each and all different colors and sizes. it would be a perfect craft idea for a kid's summer birthday party. it didn't take us long and the girls were very good at tying double knots with grosgrain ribbon. (the strawberries and hot pink polka dot ribbons were the flying favorites.) we found it easiest to start with thick ribbons and fill in the gaps with what i call scrap ribbon. cut the ribbons 5 or 6 inches long. we sat in a circle on the floor and when one person got done, they went to help another girl tie ribbons until all the flip flops were finished. they each had their own style too, hopefully a step up from the fruit loop necklace. they were all so happy to have a secret something ready for mother's day.

Also cute with fabric strips and one of my daughters made some with balloons at a birthday party.

Great Mother's Day idea...I might make some for myself.
