baby shower gift tutorial

all of the baby blue & cocoa colors have me excited to greet my li'l boy. (who is participating in a li'l jam session of dance, dance revolution right now. yep, 10:30 pm, he's right on schedule.) this darling website, Modern Tots has such sweet things for babes. clean lines and fresh shapes.

i know so many who are entering the world of motherhood, i would love to get them something unique & special. it is hard for someone like me to really know what a new mom actually needs. i need some help.

please do tell. what was your favorite baby shower gift you ever got and/or gave?

Homemade gifts are always lovely. But I think I really enjoyed books on making baby food (Annabel Karmel, or Blender Baby Food)...as well I think there is a new baby food making tool out now called the Beaba...steaming, cooking, defrosting - sounds great!

Needs: only a car seat and her breasts, really.

But enjoys and is grateful for---oh so much!

My latest favorite thing is from a company called Hooter Hider, and Target just started carrying them. In the past if you wanted to be modest and nurse in public, you'd use a receiving blanket. Problem was, the baby would pull the blanket down, the blanket would be too hot, and you couldn't see what you were doing (not good when you're still mastering techniques).

These "hiders" solve all 3 problems. Extremely light, can't be pulled down (they go around your neck) and it has some kind of wire thing that holds the blanket out at top so you can see baby and baby can see you.

They come in all sorts of patterns. Love mine:-)

One word: Boppy.

When you register for wedding stuff you pick cool vases. After the wedding you realize you need a potato peeler. Before the baby who thinks of a hooter hider? You should get one to match every outfit.

I am actually going to a shower tomorrow! My favorite gift is a crocheted blanket that I usually do for my closest friends.

There are some cute items on Etsy!

I can't really think of a favorite thing I received...but an item I always give now are good burp cloths. My little girl would spit up after every meal and I found that good burp clothes were necessary. I found the Gerber burp cloths held liquid the best. :)

Hmm...I'd have to say: my Lulu the lamb chair from babystyle, definitely my bobby and hotsling, my kid co. food mill, freezer trays, etc. and all the little handmade things...my mother framed some really old b & w photos of my great grandmother when she was living in Greece, etc.

Sorry I know you said one thing, but I didn't think you'd mind ;)

I am going to second the Hooter Hider. If you plan on nursing, that is the BEST THING EVER. I love the new Method baby bath soap too. And Aquafor has worked wonders on my babys' bums when they get diaper rash. My go-to shower gift right now is a custom tee from Resa Design. I love the little initial on a simple onesie. They are adorable on. Good luck!!!

i really had no idea what I needed to get..my favorite gift was a set of burp cloths that had a hand stitched border around them. I also loved nice blankets...one that was a stretchy cotton from nordstroms..good for bundling up tight and the one whit made. I'm sure you'll get one.

I love handmade items. Those are always special. But if you're purchasing something, I really love our baby bouncer. This is a huge lifesaver. I could put our baby in it while I showered or when I just needed to set him down for a minute. It vibrates and when he got older he could bounce it himself. Also, one of my favorite gifts was a wipe warmer. When he'd wake up in the night for changing, one time we failed to use the wipe warmer and he cried. Every time after that we used the warmer and it was smooth sailing. I have so many favorites...the boppy, gripwater, butt paste...

wipe warmer (unless you're going green and using washcloths)

there's nothing worse than watching your babe grimmace as you clean him off at 2am with a cold wipe.

yes, I would have to say a wipe warmer.

with my first babe my favorite was a backpack carrier. we actually had ambitions of taking the kid backpacking with us. that didn't happen, but he has come on many a hike in that thing. with the third, i love my puj sling. way cute, way convenient. but i could have made it myself for much less.

Ooo. Love this question. I love to give little board books for babies. I adore the Sheep series.. Sheep in a Jeep for example. And, Kipper DVD's are a must for every baby. Kipper is kind and he teaches good manners.. parents don't get tired of him easily either.. I love Elmo.. but how long can you listen to him.. seriously. :)

three favorite gifts I received:
1) burpee cloths made of cloth diapers with a baby-blue-star-printed fleecy panel sown in the middle section. My babe doesn't need burp cloths anymore, but insists in taking one of these soft burpees to sleep.
2) Beautiful picture books to add to your children's book library. This is also a gift I love to give. So many lovely ones out there: The Little Red Hen, You are My I Love You, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Make Way for Ducklings
3) Really rich and lovely hand cream, what with all the hand washing you'll be doing!

One of my favorite things was a SwaddleMe -- they come in flannel, fleece, and waffle weave and they velcro around baby to make swaddling a breeze! So nice for newborns and it really helped my daughter to sleep better. (A mother's dream.)

I second the endorsement for Aquaphor -- great for so many kinds of rashes!
And, you can never have too many board books.

Oh, great question. Burp clothes are a favorite here because I've had really spitty babies. My SIL made me screen-printed onesies which were so fun and personal. My big gift from my husband with baby #1 (which also coincided with Christmas because she came 5 days before it) was my armchair/glider with ottoman. A good chair is invaluable. Also a pack'n'play. You'll need one when visiting family. My babies have both slept in the bassinet portion next to my bed for those first few sleepless weeks before transitioning to their cribs. Ooh, I love baby shopping. Feel free to ask more questions about gear- you have an eager audience to help you find the best stuff!

I always love getting cute little clothes (even though I don't need any after 4 boys). Also - you can never go wrong with your favorite picture book, or even a handful of board books.

Having just had a little boy, it's so fun to read your blog and share in your journey. One of my favorite gifts was a Bebe Au Lait nursing cover. It is one of the things I use almost every day and has really come in handy when I need to nurse in other people's homes, etc...I think they even sell them at Target now!

Also, burp cloths burp cloths burp cloths.

I think you really need burp cloths, a swing, a My Breast Friend (google it...better than a Boppy), a really good, roomy diaper bag, Hyland's teething pills (you will need them sooner than you think), Gripe water (a godsend if your baby has reflux), and a small diaper pail. We do cloth, so we just bought one of those cheapo ones with a hinged lids that I think was 10 dollars from Babies R Us.

Babies are so exciting and fun (to shop for)...Congrats!

a women and her daughter that i don't even know (apparently they know my mom) made us this most amazing fleece blanket. it is so soft and cuddly and has cute sporty balls all over it. its too big and bulky for our little guy now but i can't wait to use it to build forts, make indoor tents, and cuddle while watching baby einstein. the fun never stops.
