m. shakin it up

last week's domestic diva deliciousness project: homemade baby banana bread loaves and my chicken salad open faced lunch.

so i'm sitting here with my 31 week old belly wondering what to write. {the sidebar poll says that most of you like to read posts of personal stories, which thrills me and also makes me wonder. because usually my personal stories are random narratives that just spill out without rhyme or reason. it's a tad scary. but fun too. like a ride at Disneyland that you've never been on and have no idea what's coming. so here goes, buckle up.} i cannot believe how fast this pregnancy seems to be going. the doc says all is well and i couldn't be happier. he also mentioned to be sure i am getting sufficient amounts of iron in my diet. therefore today we are having a picnic lunch of tuna sandwiches (it is finally beautiful summer weather in my neck of the woods, hoorah!) and then heading out to a cute old fashioned diner tonight for some serious-iron-enriched burgers, fries and shakes. couldn't be happier about that too.

for the past few weeks of domestic divaness, i have attempted to fix healthful and nutritious meals for d and me. for example, last night was vegetarian supper which consisted of: spinach salad with strawberry slices and red bell pepper along with drop biscuits and roasted asparagus (go iron!) and sweet potatoes (go vitamin A!). i am loving all the fresh yumminess and the fact that i am motivated to eat well so the li'l one eats well. it's all about the nurturing. i have a notebook in my head full of goals that i want to do. becoming a good mom and becoming a better me and becoming a rejuvinated healthy individual are top on the list.

but this morning i had another goal in mind.
to find the best tasting shake in town.

every
single joint we pass insists that they have the best, creamiest, thickest, yummiest, freshest, amazingest shake. i just don't buy it. they can't all have the best. {i mean even Wendy's is boasting about their frosty's. i mean, heck i love a mini chocolate chilled frosty every once in awhile, but seriously, there is nothing new about the frosty. and it's definitely not in the shake category. are frosty sales dipping? why the need to put it out on the marquee? we all know Wendy's serves frostys. i mean, why else would self respecting adults be ordering the kid's meal? we love and appreciate the frosty. no advertisement needed. it's a little like the slurpee. i mean, who needs to be told that slurpees are amazingly fresh and appealing on a hot summer day? do we need the reminder that the 7/11 sells them? no. so yes, i declare that the frosty and slurpee are in their own separate categories of deliciousness. not to be confused with the more fattening option of a thick and creamy, made with ice cream shake.}

so once we taste every shake in town, we'll know which restaurant is the real deal. we will actually be doing ourselves a service. we won't be shorting ourselves on just an okay shake when really the most lovely thick smooth delicious shake exists just two doors down. how can we not spend this hot pregnant summer researching this important task? who's in? maybe we could start another blog about it; dedicated to our findings.

dan laughed at my shake suggestion this morning. (i don't think he realized all the thought that had accrued in my mind over the topic, otherwise he may have been more careful to laugh at a pregnant woman's seven in the morning New Goal of the Summer suggestion). or maybe he was laughing because just last night i was praising the awesome simplicity in farm fresh eating at our supper. i was saying, sweet potatas are every bit as good as a bite of chocolate cake. which in a sense is very true. i love the wholesome goodness of a sweet potato. on the other hand, there were no slices of chocolate cake available in my kitchen last night either.

but i digress, i'm not suggesting we taste test every single shake in town in one night, that would be ccccrazy. i'm just saying this new goal should be in the back of our minds whenever we have a date night or a lunch outing..... or a mid-morning craving. thus making us secret shopper shake spies.

it sounds like a good idea to me. and to brucey, the boy in my belly.

sounds good to me. although i might modify my own personal quest to the best vanilla coke in town. so far paces dairy is the sure winner!

Plus, you have to sample the fries at each locale! Lucky...

the most divine shake will be found at Joe's Filling Station (a cute diner...could it be the one you're going to tonight???) in Rexburg on the left hand side of the rode past walmart. It looks like an old gas station and most people don't notice it there. Flavor= huckleberry (because idaho and wyoming are known for their huckleberries), with whip cream on top, 2 spoons, (don't get it malted), and a huge smile on your face. Oh I'm craving it right now! I would also recommend their tater tots, they are all perfectly shaped!

and one more thought, Reed's dairy in Idaho Falls is a catch as well. They have the creamiest most delicious chocolate milk i've ever tasted (because they put potato flakes in it...really!...read the ingredients!) and delicious ice cream flavors at that. You can also buy reed's dairy products in the grocery stores there!

This baby is in for a fun life! While Dan may laugh at this suggestion, a little boy will cheer. Keep a little notebook in your purse and give each shake a 1-10 rating (1=I feel like I could throw up; 10=I would happily choose this if it were my last meal.)

I will be visiting later this summer and I'll want to see your list. ❤

Are you in SE Idaho? I grew up in St. Anthony (10 miles north of Rexburg) and worked at Big J's. We used to make fresh strawberry shakes. They will even make it for you with handscooped ice cream instead of soft serve if you ask... well they used to. I haven't worked there in almost 10 years. It is right on the main road in St. A. It is hard to miss.

Excellent, excellent plan. Now I'm severely tempted to tool down the road in search of a shake ;-)

That's funny, during a summer trip through Idaho it was my goal to find who had the best Mud Pie (it seemed to be on every menu, everywhere). I think the Mud Pie at Redfish Lake Lodge won.

i think i could totally wrap my hands around that goal. wishing you much luck on your search for the best milkshake.

I love this goal of yours! My family went on a hunt for the best raspberry shake in bear lake one year... (because Everyone claimed to have the best) We tested a new place every night... funny thing is, we forget which one we liked best... so we end up doing this every year.
mmm, i could really go for one right now.

31 weeks.........wow! time passes quickly, eh?
i wanted to vote for more than one item on your poll because i like the variety but i'm not surprised that your personal narratives with no rhyme or reason are tops. i love your spilling. inspires me to just write out what i'm thinking more often instead of having it all organised and edited. your words always flow and they are a real treat to read.
i'm a malt lover and i think searching out the *best* is a brilliant idea.
the Aussie milkshake is thin. our American creations put them to shame. Hah!
