memories of a cold car ride.

driving at 8 am through two school zones with one bundled baby, one george michael song, and a friendly hooded sweatshirt later i realize it is officially cold. and officially autumn. the pumpkined porches and bewitching balloon characters on the lawns say it's practically one calendar page flip away from winter weather. i don't think i'm ready for this. i have loved my extended flipflop season. yet i do love scarves wrapped around my neck. and sipping cocoa. and nothing beats an oversized cozy sweater either. and this year we are so definitely getting a heated blanket for the bed. so i suppose there are some things to look forward to. i'll be doing some serious hibernating in our li'l house. the radio dj was discussing homemade gifts for christmas. she is already making jam. wow. i guess i should start thinking ahead myself. and saving too. aren't you always wanting some extra cash for christmas? Real Simple will tell you in april to start putting pennies away for the holidays. yeah right. that so doesn't work with me. but beginning october ninth to think about christmas.. sure i suppose that's a good idea.

this weather reminds me of high school. getting up so early on the crisp mornings and driving to school in the famous old yellow truck. the pleather seats were like ice and my mix tapes were scattered on the floor along with a tarp, loose change and wires of some sort. sharing with my brother was always fun. i'd whip around the roads blasting the heat and deciding between 10,000 maniacs or mxpx. i'd pick up a friend and head into the high school back lot and circle around a few hundred times for a spot and shove my buttered toast into my mouth and throw my sweater and mascara on in the same fashion and head to class with my bag slung and my pens spilling and my notebook filled. life was oh so simple back then. how come i thought it was so complicated?

another autumn. the same girl, a whole new girl.

You listened to MXPX?? That's great! I have to admit, I actually still listen to them on occassion and even went to see them live a couple years ago.

Yes, it's one of my guilty pleasures.

what a great post. i love fall. it's my favorite time of year. it's always so introspective. and retrospective... and extrospective (as i like to say). and ever so much better with a brand new babe...

Wow, I haven't heard mxpx mentioned since high school! Ah, those were the days...

I saw your comment on my blog...what a great idea for Christmas garland! And thanks for bringing it to my attention that the birdie garland was on Your Heart Out, I had no idea. If you do want a custom garland, I'm sure I can whip something up for you. You can email me at sparrow.originals@gmail.com.

Wonderful blog, by the way! Such gorgeous photos...

That's funny you say that about high school. I was just saying the same thing to my hubby this morning. It seems so simple now, but back then, it just really wasn't!

I miss our high school days with Nicole, Marlies, and Mr. Grace. Remember when I would make you highlight my hair with the store bought kits? You were such a good sport!

My older brother used to drive a canary yellow '69 chevy pickup. When he was a senior and I was a sophomore he would let me ride to school with him. The only music he would play would be either the Beastie Boys or Weird Al. Those 15 minute drives were the closest we've ever got to bonding time.

Thank you so much for reminding me of them.

Ha! MXPX - have not thought about them since high school!
Why DID life seem so complicated? :)

Oh, this takes me back to my morning drive to high school. My mixed tapes were scattered all over the floor too!

Life did seem so complicated then, but looking back it does seem so simple. I guess it's all relative though; one day I will probably think this period in life was simple too.

Lovely post.

i humbly suggest an electric mattress pad instead of an electric blanket. the mattress pad goes over your mattress, under your sheets. since heat rises, it does more to keep you warm and snuggly at night than a blanket. you can even get them with dual controls in case your hubby, like mine, is always at least 20 degrees warmer than you are :)

Oh, mixtapes - I miss them just reading this!

And yay, MXPX! Their version of "Take on Me" was my favorite to play as a college radio dj :-)
