when i find out my sister is coming to town

and packing along her hubby and three cuties, i bust out the candy bowls, my secret stash of sweets, the must-have-on-hand brownie mix, and the basket of games. (speaking of which, our game department is suffering. do tell, what is your family favorite?) am still hunting down any hello kitty stickers and/or princess paraphernalia. it is bound to be a flurry of fun. this morning my only saturday plan was clean craft closet. am giddy to scribble that out and substitute play with nieces. wishing you a happy pancake saturday morning.

it is noted that i'd be able to find said girlie stickers much easier if indeed this closet were clean and tidy. its times like these when i say oh bother in my best winnie the pooh accent and run off to enjoy the fun at hand.

Target had hello kitty stamps, socks, and cards (playing) in their dollar bin a few weeks ago!

My favorite family game is Apples to Apples, not sure the age on this game, but it is definitely worth checking out!

I've always loved Pictionary, but a more fun alternative would be Cranium.
Have a great weekend! There's nothing better than time with family.

We always play Happy Family (more fun with more people and kids can play) and The Name Game.

Happy Family: Each person writes down the name of a famous person or character on a small piece of paper. All papers are put into a cup. One reader (someone who doesn't know anyone's handwriting) reads all the names once. One person starts by asking another person if they are so-and-so. If they are, they are then together in a family. If they're not so-and-so, they get to ask someone else if they are such-and-such. The winner is the last person to get guessed. If that doesn't make sense, email me back and I'll explain it better.

The Name Game is like password, but with names. It's more fun if everyone contributes the names for the game.

Steal Scrabble-- you place all the scrabble letters face down on a carpet with an open space in the middle. You each take turns flipping a letter over and when the letters form a word, whoever is the first to say the word can take all of the letters (and place them word-format next to them). Continue flipping around the circle. However, others can steal your words by rearranging letters (ie: someone has RAT. another person can say, "TAR!" and take those letters) or by rearranging with other letters in the middle (ie: someone has RAT. someone flips an E, so you can say "RATE!" and take the E as well as the other person's RAT).

other family favorites of ours: Couch, Pictionary, Monopoly, Cranium

Try Zingo... I am getting it for my kids for Christmas. I have lots of friends who have and and really love it. It's $14-$15 dollars.

We love Whoonu (by Cranium). It's great for a get-to-know-you "date" with new couples, and it's equally as fun with family and those we know well. Plus, a game is really short, so it's easy to bow out after just 20 minutes, or go all night.

Apples to Apples. My kids are teens, but it's a great game to play with all ages (and a good cross over game). Hands down, our favorite group game. Have fun.

We are pretty lame-o in the game department as well. Our favorites are the classics: skipbo and phase 10. We also love apples to apples when there are enough people around to play!

Have fun with your sister and her family... how exciting to have visitors!

The games suggested are all solid. I'd like to add Mexican Dominoes in the mix. It can last forever if you play all the rounds or you can play a few rounds and come back or just one... Whatever.
Also, I see you seem to have a go-to brownie mix but I just had to suggest Betty Crocker Triple Chunk Brownie. You can not go wrong. They are amazing.

I love Apples to Apples (played in the silliest way possible, of course). Enjoy the visit! Sisters are the best!

So, this game isn't really for kids BUT...it is AWESOME:

SETTLERS OF CATAN

it's like a mix between Monopoly, Pit and Risk.

Love your blog!

KJ said...

oh, playing with nieces is such a treat! as for games, settlers of catan is good for grownups that like thinking games. Twister can be super fun with the right crowd, and I like Boggle and Scattergories (word games!) For little ones, Memory, Candyland and Cranium Hoolabaloo (or something like that). must go make brownies now.

What, pray tell, is Mexican Dominoes?

Everyone's already mentioned it, but Apples to Apples, definitely. A good old game of Jenga's pretty amusing, too!

Also, Marta, there's an award waiting for you on my blog. You're such an inspiring person, it was only right to choose you as one of my picks. <3

within the past year or so we discovered Ticket to Ride and have found it quite enjoyable.
we recommend it to all for a good time and a little competition!

Bananagrams is our favorite game! My 10-year old is good at it, but it would be hard for younger kids. Also, check out Quiddler for reading/spelling-capable people of all ages.
