seventeen big boy months old

yesterday b and me spent the day–which i deemed pajama day–together in our usual states of comfort. it was a lovely laid back seventeen month old celebration. i didn't comb his hair (or mine for that matter); we wore sweatshirts and bopped around the place making grocery lists and tidying up. i've come to enjoy these types of tasks because my funny little sidekick loves them so. opening the dryer (or dishwasher or fridge or oven) door seems to be the highlight of his day. he'd like to climb in and explore awhile. the small table i now refer to as his (who am i kidding, everything in this place is his) is still his favorite refuge after a job well done.

he does jobs even when we're on vacation. we stopped by my parents' place on sunday. to his delight, not only did they have toys available but cupboards in the kitchen too. and on his level! this boy made it a point to open every single cupboard door and peer inside. if intrigue gets the best of him, he'll pull out the contents for a thorough inspection. thank goodness he's learning to clean up. after he scattered my mom's plastic bowls all over the floor, he picked each one up and stacked them so neatly. as if we assigned him, on our long car ride to utah, to oversee the plastic bowls at oma's house.

a few things i hope never to forget. benji is growing up so quick. somedays i'll reach into his crib after an afternoon nap and could swear he grew bigger in that timeframe. it is an unmatchable joy to see your offspring growing into themselves. i have feelings that can't be described so easily. all the ooey gooey clichés about loving a little one is true, as far as i'm concerned.

he knows how to say tickle tickle. foreign accented and gurgled, but still, it's one of his more understandable words from his darling baby language. this past weekend, of his own accord, he pointed to every big shiny semi-truck we passed on the freeway, with a wide smile on his face. he loves to dance to music. i love seeing the recognition of a familiar tune; like the opening to the ellen show at three o'clock. he loves to peer out the window; even creating a small space to peek out from the darkening shades in his room. he adores conquering the shape sorter, the wooden pegs and jack-in the-box. he stacks blocks and canned goods with confidence. he has learned the art of clapping and kissing and turning electrical devices on and off. and best of all, when he smiles, his eyes turn into half moons.

he is still very much our bundle of joy. ever loving. ever growing. ever adventurous. ever eager. ever helpful. ever curious. ever sweet as sunshine.

happy seventeen months.

I love how there is a slight bit of "baby" left in his cute little face. We have a 20 month old and I am sad to say that the "baby" has disappeared and been replaced by a big girl. Good thing we will have another baby in a few short months!

Do you mind if I ask which program you are able to add the text/graphic at the bottom of the picture? What a perfect way to preserve such a sweet memory.

My youngest is 4 years old and every day I hug her and sniff in her "baby" smell knowing that too soon she'll be too tall to really snuggle and pick up. I know this because my oldest is already 18 and narrowing down his college choices and my middle child is 6 and oh, so smart and grown up and too tall to pick up and snuggle (it's definitely a sit down snuggle!). Kids are the best thing ever. Ever. Enjoy!

He is adorable. And looks more & more like a little boy rather than a baby. Exciting but also makes you nostalgic for what was, I imagine...

Thanks for sharing him with your readers. I love watching him grow & reading your sweet words about him, too. :)

I agree with Betsy, these posts do not help to curb my baby fever either!

I have been a quiet reader of your blog for a long time and have enjoyed the little bits of mommy pride that you share with us--makes me think that being a mom really is the best job in the world (everyone says that--but I really see that here)!

So after keeping quiet for so long I have finally left my comment! Thanks for the beautiful art and lovely words of wisdom that you share with us each week-it has been great fun and inspirational :)

I love that age. It is exhausting, you do so much "following" and "chasing." But, just think, you are THE LOVE of his life right now!

what a fun world to take a peek into. mr. benjamin's world seems ever sunny and busy (the good kind of busy, of course). and his tiny table really does look like the perfect spot.

i love where you mention reaching into his crib after a nap. oh so sweet to picture what that will be like someday! my favorite home videos are the ones where mom snuck into our room with the video camera, just as we were getting up from a nap. such a quiet, happy moment.

He is adorable! And I just noticed that he's wearing a shirt with the number 17 on it. :)
Ditto on the bulldozer, where did you get it?

Love your blog and designs!
