my fabric wrapped wreath

after browsing so many do-it-yourself wreaths, i decided to give it a go. it was painless and even really fun. i loved it so much in fact, i returned to the store with big plans to whip out a dozen more, but to no avail. unfortunately my fabric wrapping addiction has been put on hold til the store gets more wire wreaths in stock. (which may be for the best.) in the meantime, i give you my made-up DIY steps and photo tutorial.

here's the finished product. this project takes like ten minutes. seriously. i want to try wrapping a wreath all in cream colored fabrics and then dipping it in glitter. no, i'm kidding. kind of. but really, i may be sending them out next year as gifts. they would be perfect for shipping in a box filled with peppermint candies instead of packing peanuts. cute, right?! if you are my sister, cousin or bff, please try to forget so you'll be surprised. here is my own do-it-yourself tutorial. if i can do it, you can do it.

all you need is fabric, 12 inch wire wreath(s), and scissors. five festive fat quarters is plenty. for a non-sewer like me, purchasing a handful of fabric fat quarters is like taking a bite of sewing meringue pie without the guilt. and there's more good news; a needle and thread is not needed for this project!

unfold your fabric fat quarter and rip a long strip, about 1 to 2 inches wide. i like the ripped, raggedy, homemade, retro look to this wreath. maybe that's just me. i used approximately three strips of each fabric for my wreath. you'll have more fabric to make another wreath!

with the front (rounded side) of the wire wreath facing away from you, wrap a strip of fabric around the wreath a couple times and tie it in a tight double knot on the backside.

once you've tied it in a knot, cut any long ends and tuck the remains underneath the knot. repeat wrapping and tying with more fabric, alternating colors if you wish. be sure to overlap the fabrics a bit, so none of the wire wreath shows.

here is a look at the knotty backside of my fabric wreath. kinda cute in it's own way. it's nice that the wreath is indented on the back, the knots fit nicely inside so the wreath still hangs against the wall.

pick a spot and hang it proudly. my fabric wrapped wreath finds a home above my creation station.

You have just confirmed for me that I should add 'make my own wreath' to my Christmas to do list for next year. Yours is gorgeous and I have seen so many lovely ones around this year.

Love your hanging ribbons over the window too and is that another lovely glittery star I spy!

xx

I heart this wreath idea. Makes me want to go out to buy pretty Christmas fabric and start making a wreath! And I so can totally understand how you would be addicted to making more wreaths.
Thanks Martha :)

I love this idea! You have chosen such a beautiful selection of fabrics - it's brilliant : )
Also, I had not heard Ingrid & Sara's song until you mentioned it here, so I found it and it's been on repeat ever since! Thanks for the inspiration : )

I love the idea of simple and homemade, and you have totally accomplished that with this wreath.

The possibilities are endless! I can see one for my niece/nephew, a bridal shower, an engagement gift, and a birthday present.

Thanks, Marta!

You can cut out a piece of carboard in the shape you want and use this technique to cover it...

Just a thought.
