new year's eve around the globe party

my sister, amy has a cute new year's eve tradition with her kiddos. they celebrate new year's eve around the globe! i think it's the perfect way to enjoy a party with your children, maintain a sane bedtime, and let them bang pots and pans (just a few hours earlier)! she picks a dreamy place to theme her party around; a vacation spot two hours ahead of her locale. (favorites have been washington D.C. and miami.) she whips up a creative meal, treats, games and party favors for the big countdown. at ten o'clock, they holler and hoot and pop streamers for the new year.

i'm excited to host her family for an impromptu party this year! i am thinking of a pizza party in true new york city fashion. there will be a checkers competition, apples to apples (in honor of the big apple), a play-doh sculpting game (in honor of the MOMA) and something sweet ala serendipity. i can hardly wait. any more new yorkian suggestions?

since i've never hosted a new year's bash before i wonder if it's a major faux pas to still have christmas decorations up. thoughts?? i'm definitely keeping mine up for my sister's family. it feels too festive to take down already.

what are your new year's eve traditional favorites?

I love that idea! Your NY ideas are great (Apples to Apples is a personal favorite of mine). I am leaving my christmas decorations up through new year's because I can't bring myself to take them down yet. :)

Christmas decorations are fun and festive. Also, just got back from NY, LOVED everything about Central Park. What about dinner or table decorations in honor of the park: Animals, horses, dogs, toy trees, etc? cute centerpiece for kids? Love this party idea. Hope your celebration is a success :) also LOVE the new header. Passing on your blog to friends. Happy new year.

Fantastic ideas and such a great one for children too. I think you should definitely keep the Christmas decorations up, here in England they always stay up into the new year but according to 'old wives tales' should be taken down before 6th January as it is bad luck to have them up after that. (Such a shame that my birthday is on the 6th - I was always so sad to see those decorations go before my special day!!)

for something sweet, you could serve NY cheesecake bites.

And I think Christmas decs are totally fine for NYE!

Terrific idea. Unfortunately for us, 2 hours ahead puts us somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, but maybe we'll just celebrate at 6 instead of 10?

For New York, definitely make frozen hot chocolate. It's easy to make at home and so delicious. Also, pair it with a side of Magnolia bakery cupcakes and you'll be in heaven.

I would also recommend a Broadway/show tunes themed activity. Dressing up, acting out and general performing is always fun, fun, fun. Happy New Year!

One of our New Year's Traditions is for everyone to record their Top Ten favorite events of the outgoing year, and their Top Ten hopes for the incoming year.

I love the idea of having a theme for the evening!

We keep Christmas up until New Years Day. I think it's fun to keep it up until then.

Please don't take down the Christmas decor! We want to see all the fun details you've put into your decorating. I knew we chose the best place to visit for New Years. Can't wait to celebrate the NY in NY!!!!

Love the idea of a kids party for NYE! Our girls are naturally early birds to bed so this would be lovely to celebrate with cousins. As for the holiday decor, definitely keep it up! We keep ours up until 3 Kings Day on the 6th.

Every year we take the tree down on New Year's Eve because growing up, my mother always told us that it's bad luck to bring the old tree into the new year. However, this will be the third year in a row that we'll be hosting a New Year's Day bash and so for the very first time, I'll be keeping the tree up to make the house more festive... my friends never get to see my house in full holiday mode and I think this will be a good opportunity to show it off. I've never had a tree on New Year's Day before so only time will tell if it brings us bad luck. Have fun hosting the New York/New Year's Party!! Sounds like fun!!

what a fun idea for celebrating new years. you could hang a silver ball from the ceiling as a nod to the times square ball drop. :)

I live on the east coast, and we've done NYE: London-style for a couple years (and w/ REALLY little ones). It's great b/c we've done dinners of fish and chips, and then at 7pm (!!) rang in the new year w/ pots and pans and lots of fun. Our friend (the host) even found the NYE fireworks in London (from the year before) that we would watch at "midnight." We got to see friends, kids got to celebrate.. and all went to bed at a decent hour.

Here's an idea: change out the christmas ornaments on the tree and make it a new years tree. Just add noise makers, 2012 glasses and balloons to the tree. The balloons can be filled with inspirational sayings for the new year and money in some. Pop a balloon every hour to ring in the new year. Happy New Year! :-)
