review & giveaway / Lifestyle Crafts Epic 6 Letterpress Tool

am catching up on product review posts due to last week's absence. this one rocked my world and is every letterpress lover's dream come true. if you can make it through this post you can enter to win one for your very own. yay.

the design team at lifestyle crafts were rad enough to offer me a product review opportunity. (i only agree to stuff that extremely interests me.) i enthusiastically said YES, PLEASE. they kindly sent me an Epic 6 Letterpress Combo Kit and a few lovely accessories to get me started. this machine is perfect for making die-cuts and letterpressing small paper items.

to be frank, i have not played with anything this crafty since my days working at pebbles in my pocket in orem, utah, nine years ago. that place was über fun, however having cute handwriting was practically part of the job requirement. i felt major pressure (self-induced) to be scrappy and crafty and creative and therefore stopped scrapbooking before the craze even got off the ground. just saying this so you know that i'm not one bit scrapper savvy here. i did take a college course in letterpress. however, following the user-friendly handbook (very short and straight-forward) is all you need to get going. when it comes to getting crafty, practice is all it takes.

the epic six is the perfect thing for any letterpress project that is 6 inches wide, no giant posters here. however you can make designer greeting cards, envelopes, business cards, cupcake wrappers, banners, place cards and much much more. believe me i have dozens of letterpressed posters from college tucked somewhere in our storage garage, so i am delighted with the small, simple and practical format anyway.

i highly recommend using the stock that lifestyle crafts offers. it is the nice cushy cotton blend of paper and it's already cut to size! my regular cardstock did not take impressions as nicely. i also would recommend getting the accessory tool kit as well. it includes all of my favorite things - the very same things my letterpress teacher made us go out and buy. my old bone folder has bookbinders glue dried to it. so be forewarned, keep your bone folder neat and pretty. that way, you will allow it to touch your precious paper projects. the palette mixing knife, bone folder, exacto knife and clear ruler (i love clear plastic printed with grids!!) are indispensable.

when ready to letterpress, prep all your paper beforehand and line it up in stacks according to project. that way you can print, mix inks, and print some more. you will get on a roll and will be happy not to go cut / find paper in the middle of your letterpress magic.

i didn't have a defined goal in mind other than creating some nice note cards. so i played around with the different printing plate sets. they all have cute elements that are easy to mix and match. i loved getting the envelopes in on all the fun. prepare for a few mistakes. i was a bit heavy handed with the ink at first but soon got the hang of it. my final prints are great quality, if i do say so myself. the ink cleans off with handy dandy wipes too. i kept them close at hand as i kept getting ink everywhere.

then i got sucked into the simple circle design and went wild. you can do lots more with this machine, i was just a bit circle happy at the moment. forgive me. every day tags are the best to have on hand.  i like how the inks on these tags vary due to my un-mixing technique. you can go wild thanks to the creative license this machine allows for. did i really just say you can go wild when all i really did was letterpress neat, perfect, pretty circles?! whatever gets you going, i guess. i did a whole letterpressing project, start to finish, in one hour. i found that drying time (especially for metallic ink) needs to be at least 48 hours for no ink to rub off on fingers. all the more time to admire them.

i used the A2 flats and my own envelopes for this set of silvery circle stationery. the other side of this set is blank, ready for addressing and delivering mini speeches of handwritten gratitude. people are good and deserve cute note cards in their mailboxes. letterpressed with love, of course. i appreciate that this machine is petite (and pretty) enough to sit on my desk when i have my craft craze on (and going strong) and still perfectly small enough to tuck into my closet while awaiting a crafty bolt of lightning to hit. i also love how easy it is to use and experiment with. am super happy that making unique letterpress prints can now be at your fingertips and your kitchen counter. three cheers for readily accessible letterpress equipment.

That thing looks simply amazing! hmm something interesting to mention... I feel like Miss Bates in Emma, all I can think of is three very dull things indeed LOL. The other day I was at the GP because we thought my daughter's arm might be broken and he told me that apparently at 1 yr old she has more bones than us adults, and at some point they will fuse together and become less in number as a result. (It wasnt broken in the end) I thought that was a bit interesting?

Awesome dessert: honeycomb choc ripple in a bowl...layer of whipped cream with a bit of honeycomb bits blitzed to powdered consistency folded thru...cream shouldn't taste too sweet. Layer of choc ripple biscuits (type cream can soak into, not choc dipped), layer honeycomb cream, layer butternut snap biscuits (google both types of biscuits if u need...not sure what they call them outside of Australia!). Keep alternating cream layer then biscuit layer, and alternate choc biscuits layer with butternut biscuit layer. Finish with crumbled flaked chocolate. Seal for freshness and leave overnight at very least in fridge. You will be in dessert heaven the next day, guaranteed :)

I love how those envelopes came out! And good tip about the 48 hour drying time. Here's my super simple recipe for an individual low cal/fat key lime pie. Use a pre-made graham shell (small individual sized) and fill it with Key Lime flavored yogurt. Put it in the freezer for 10 min. One small container of yogurt will fill two pie shells.

Thanks for the chance to win!

I love listening to Orange Colored Sky sung by Natalie Cole... honestly you don't even have to be cleaning for this. It is great while cooking and baking and all around listening.

OH SO CUTE! I would love that.

My little tidbit is that I'm about ready to launch my new design/inspiration/portfolio blog! I'm so excited, I can hardly focus on anything else!

Happy Spring :)

I have never seen a letterpress before. It looks really easy and I can already think of a couple of projects.

My spring cleaning tip is to basket at the top and bottom of staircases. As you clean a floor put things that should be on other floors in the basket and then take it all up and distribute it in one go. It saves on trips up and down the stairs

My favorite spring cleaning tip involves getting WAY into the back of my pantry shelves. I find food staples get lost in the back of my deep pantry shelves so each spring I take everything out of the pantry and remove any items I have not used the past 6 months. They get boxed up and donated to the local food bank.

I hope I win! I made these recently and they were really good.

My best tip for spring cleaning is kick everyone out of the house and get to work. Kids and hubby always decide they "NEED" whatever I'm about to toss that they haven't touched in a year. They never miss it if they aren't here to see it go.

I would LOVE to win this. Learning to Letterpress is on my list for the year.

I have realized that making my bed right after I wake up and doing the dishes as I dirty them make the bedroom and kitchen (respectively) look cleaner and help to motivate me to do more clean up.

Cute cards!!

Oh my god where have I been locked in a cupboard truly cant believe I have just discovered you followed a link from Hart + Sew which I found via The Ardent Sparrow.

Im not much of a spring cleaner but I do love to make the house smell good when I'm feeling a bit blue or unmotivated. My favourite blend at the moment is Rosewater & Ylang Ylang.

It makes me feel lush and slightly boozey lol. My hubby (yes I am for real) has actually been at me to get a letter press kit but I have been holding off as we are trying to downsize and pack things away ready for finding our perfect first home.

oh man. i would love a letterpress.

my current favorite song to dance to is the wheels on the bus...my 9 month old really can bust a move. it helps when we get really crazy and make up new verses.

knowing you're also currently loving adele, rumour has it has been on repeat since the album came out!! oh, how I would love to be picked!!!

it was soo much fun to read the comments and learn from all the cleaning tips. all of my cleaning tips have been mentioned ... however, one personal tip is to plan a spa day after your spring cleaning. i always like to have a manicure and pedicure once all the scrubbing is taken care of. after all the cleaning, it's nice to feel a little pampered after.

by the way, tried your freezer chicken enchilada recipe last night... yum, yum. and the next day, even yummier. thanks for sharing it. :)

my best spring cleaning tip is: don't feel pressured to do it. cleaning has to be inspired.
and i love that the flowers in my yard are exploding. i have flowers on my blackberry bush! and the first rose bloom of the season is always the best.
this giveaway rocks.

The first thing I could think of is our favorite family "happy song". You can ONLY see it on YouTube. Search for Will.i.am What I Am. Yup Sesame Street. It is WONDERFUL! "If what I am is what's in me, I'll stay strong, that's who I'll be..."

I would love to win this so that I can make my own wedding invitations!!

Oh how I have admired these at Hobby Lobby! Ok I'm going to give you a delicious summer recipe that my Grandparents learned while they were on their mission in Africa!

English muffin pizzas-

Cut english muffin in half and toast.

Chop up a green pepper into small pieces, combine with shredded cheese and mayo (Sounds gross but is delish!) to make a spread.

Put spread onto toasted muffins and put in the oven on broil. Broil until bubbly on top. (A toaster oven works great for this)

Remove from oven and top with a fresh tomato slice. Salt and pepper. YUM!!! You'll love it :)

Love all projects... so cute! I have been wanting to try letterpress.

Spring Cleaning Tip: Spend 15 min at a time tacking a task. And open the windows and get fresh air! :)

I've always been interested in letterpressing. This looks amazing!

Every spring I make an attempt to tackle every single room in my house and do a complete clean sweep. Everything gets removed, cleaned and then put back nice and organized. Love spring cleaning!

Spring cleaning, just start somewhere. Really with anything I feel like just starting is the hardest part, but once you get going, the momentum keeps you going.

This is such an awesome giveaway. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have a letterpress. I wanted one for Christmas but I didn't get it and now here's my chance. My favorite thing about spring is the flowers start to bloom and everything is full of color. Thanks for the chance to win!

What a great Giveaway! My favorite spring cleaning tip is to make it fun, open the windows, make a upbeat playlist and get to work because the final product is so worth it so you can enjoy spring.

I took some letterpress classes in college and although I miss it, I don't see a true studio-worthy press in my future. I'd love to try out the home version.

The recipe I've been wowing people with lately is the Martha Stewart Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie. It's truly excellent.

oooh soo fabulous! My favourite song to dance to is Dynamite..but not the Taio Cruz version, the Nick Pitera version!

My fav spring cleaning tip is to take all my furniture outside and leave it in the sun for the day while i sweep mop scrub and boogie all day. Music is usually 80's disco.

I would so love to win a letterpress!!!!!! My best music to dnce to is ROCK of course.

best (and fastest) recipe we're loving these days is salsa chicken. 3-4 chicken breasts and 2 jars of salsa in the crockpot. 8 hours later, on low, and you have amazing chicken that practically shreds itself. add 1 can of rinse black beans and some frozen corn. it's amazing.

oh, and that letterpress would be awesome in my collection of "i want to be crafty" supplies!

i love the song "It's Amazing" by Jem. it's a good pick-me-up kind of song :)

I have been wanting one of these for awhile! And sadly, while I personally can't stay Miley Cyrus, I love Party in the USA to dance to. I think this video helps: http://youtu.be/2Ezfk7s1NyY

Spring cleaning tip: turn your clothes hangers so they are hanging the opposite way, and after 6-12 months, this will help you figure out which clothes to give away.

Bieber has been playing in our home all weekend. My daughter loves dancing to his songs.

I've been interested in trying this little machine out! Love what you've created.

I love "Rolling in the deep" by Adele right now. And the cool guys from "Ben L'Oncle Soul", pure summer goodness!

My spring cleaning tip is more of a habit I'm getting into … called "morning and evening routine". D'uh. I shake up our blankets and pillows to let them air and make the bed a bit later when I get around to it … and make an effort to clean the kitchen in the evening. SO much easier with our new dishwasher. Love it!

It would be wonderful to win this!!! An inspiring quote I heard the other day said, " Be so good at what you do that no one can ignore you." Wise words.

I have to admit that I don't really like cleaning. To motivate myself I race against the timer-- I set the microwave timer for 15 minutes and assign myself one section of the house, or one task. After 15 minutes I get a little break, or get to switch to another task!

My clothes purging tip is my favorite. Put all of your clothes on hangers and hang them all backwards on the rod. When you wear and wash an item put it back on the rod the "right way". In 3 months you'll see what it is you can donate/throw away.

Thank you!

Ooo, I've been coveting this machine for a while now! It would be so wonderful to win!

When cleaning windows, I discovered (maybe after everyone else in the world has) that if you use a squeegee instead of your paper towel, it leaves zero streaks and crystal clear windows. If you're going to do the work, might as well do it perfect!

My most recent fave recipe: Strawberry Shortcakes by Smitten Kitchen. Made them last night and they were exactly what I was craving.

My house has 7 rooms, so I pick a different room to tackle each day. BY the end of the week, it will all be clean! As I am not well, this is the best way for me to handle it. Also having a sweet husband pitch in helps ALOT.

THis machine is fabulous. I was unable to go to Artfest but this would be like an art retreat in a box! I'd be cranking out printed matter at an alarming rate if I won! (Good thing my house would be clean, so no one would be the wiser if I neglected it for a few days!)

what a great product, and i love letterpress so much! my recent spring cleaning tip is trying to rearrange rooms and furniture. makes everything feel fresh and new!

This would be the most wonderful thing ever for those of us who don't have the space for a real press.

Letterpress looks like so much fun and endless possibilities. Thanks for the giveaway!

Spring Cleaning tip....i like to combine water and a half of a lemon in a microwave safe bowl and boil it creates steam and a fresh sent - when done wipe inside of microwave - any residue comes off easily and smells great!

Letter press is so dreamy :) I would love to have a press in my own home. Oh the fun!

And a delicious recipe that looks like a lot of work but is super simple....

• phyllo cups (buy in the freezer section already cooked)
• 8 oz mascarpone
• 1 container nutella (smaller bottle)
• fresh raspberries
• crushed hazel nuts

Cream mascarpone and nutella. fill shells. top with nuts and a raspberry. Enjoy!

I almost missed seeing that their was a giveaway tied into this post eek!

My tip for the spring is to open your kitchen windows and squeeze fresh lemon along your counter tops and in your sink. Wash with water and smell the sweet scent!

kwindell said...

It's an obvious spring cleaning tip. If you haven't worn it in over a year...take it out of your closet. So easy, but sometimes so hard. Love the letterpress. Fingers crossed.

I am so excited to see this giveaway and to read your review of the letterpress machine. You have given some good advice and tips for when I get one of my own. Hopefully, through winning--or by buying one since I've read your review.
Favorite cleaning tip--put on the songs you love to dance too, crank up the volume, and dance through cleaning the house. My very favorite is Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger--but anything with a beat will get me moving.

What a great giveaway. I have had my eye on this machine for some time now!! One of my spring cleaning tips is to throw lemon wedges down the garbage disposal. It cleans the blades and leaves a fresh smell in the kitchen.

Wow - amazing giveaway! My spring cleaning tip is using baking soda and essential oils as a sprinkle for the carpet before vacuuming. I use lemon oil in the living areas and lavendar oil in the bedrooms - it really freshens up the carpets.
