you, my boy

you, my boy, seem sunnier than ever.

your summer haircut makes me smile. your dark eyes are so expressive. you wake up ready for anything and are always up for adventures (or errands with mom). how are you today, mom? you are a tender two year old; so thoughtful of how people (or characters in storybooks) are feeling. yesterday, poolside, i noted how your legs have lengthened out. no more chubby baby legs. you are a big boy now. almost three. your eyes twinkle with pride and your little hands clap when you accomplish something fantastic (like putting your face in the pool and blowing bubbles repeatedly)!

you are talking up a storm. you are memorizing songs too. i love how musical you are. you pound on grandma's piano almost every day, singing along. the days of you not talking and me worrying about your speech delay are long in the past, even though it was less than a year ago. i am amazed at the way you mimic phrases and pull them out of your hat when you need them. what time is it almost, mom? and then i'll smile and say, it's almost lunchtime or it's almost naptime or it's almost time to go. i love hearing how you're figuring out plurals and possessive pronouns. i am so proud of you.

i chuckle at the way you ask what's what (even if you already know the word in question)! you ask until i don't have any more answers to give you. it's as if you are whittling down the meaning of things 'til we get to the nitty gritty basics. i can see your wheels churn while you learn. luckily you seem satisfied with my answers, even if they are not quite as accurate as what google may give you. the other day you asked what does use mean? i was a bit stumped for a suitable answer for a toddler. all of my answers had the word use in them. you were okay with it. i'm sure all the odd questioning comes from a yearning to simply converse. which has become such a wonderful bonus in parenting. conversations! after we go somewhere, we gather up our gear and head home. you'll tell me from the backseat, that was fun, mom. we'll have to go back someday.

you continue to show me what love means. you are my constant reminder of the good life. your presence is keeping my world stable and sane. you are keeping these summer days busy with what they ought to be busy with; the zoo, the pool, the park, the sandbox, trucks and trailers, costumes and movies, napping and eating drippy snacks on grandma's patio. you are all about rolling down grassy hills, making me laugh (you love making us laugh), inquiring about eating treats, exploring, being cautious (maybe booming fireworks will be more your thing next year), splashing in the sprinklers, sitting up to the bar like a big kid for lunch, singing primary songs (especially in public places like the city library and the grocery store), taking train rides, re-telling me about our day (i love listening to your version of what we've done together), reading jamberry (a new bedtime favorite), playing games (like running away from the giant exercise ball like a mini indiana jones), and making faces at your reflection in the mirror. you crack me (and yourself) up.

i love summertime with you. xo.

Love this post Marta! My little girl just turned three and the "why?" marathon has just begun with her. I presume Benji will be doing the same very soon. So sweet. :)

I've been feeling down lately. This brought me right back up as I think about the joy my own daughter brings to me. Thanks :)
