darcy miller :: my hero
at the bookshop the other day, i picked up the february issue of ms living, perused it quickly and purchased it solely for the pretty flowers and in depth article about making white bread and adding new ingredients to whip it into something new. like rye. have i yet mentioned how much i love rye bread?! i do. the real deal rye, with caraway seeds. i could go on and on about my love affair with rye. am completely excited to find me some caraway seeds and bake a loaf; my kind of rye is hard to come by.
needless to say, i was already happy with martha. can you ever go wrong? really, truly? blogland particularly, as a whole, let me say, we are all such suckers for martha. i totally buy into everything she does (or in truth, has her people do, promote, create, etc). it wasn't until later that i came across an article that had me at hello. even moreso than the rye believe it or not.
enter darcy miller. you may know her as the editorial director of ms weddings; however she is much more than that. she is a mom too. and an artistic and talented one at that. the article features her fabulous gallery show, family. with the help of andy and kate spade, her scrapboxes (shadow boxes of memorabilia), family photo albums, and sweet unmistakeable illustrations were hung on display in new york city.
and of course, the gallery opening was a party to be dreamt about; accordion invitations, darling favor boxes, mini apple pies, on the spot portraits, and more. what i absolutely love about it (besides everything about it) is how darcy has turned her talents toward motherhood and family and life and celebrating the moments. she artistically displays them in a way that is completely inspiring.
a theme we can relate to: families, birthday parties, babies, birth certificates, magical memories and silly snapshots. and a lot of love. she creating a big fancy occasion around collecting memories and living (what i would call) the good life. however glorious the event, the message was simple, celebrate family. what a concept.

a page to save in the archives; spilling inspiration. thank you, darcy. am a fan.

Funny, I just did a post on her too. Ever since I read about her in Martha Stewart last week I can't get Darcy's creations out of my head. I keep re reading the article. Love it!
I know! I've read that article three times so far. I'm blown away by her creativity!
i'm such a sucker for martha too! i'll have to pick up that magazine and check it out...
thanks for the heads up! i'll have to pick it up. i always get excited when she is on the show!
Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing. I specially love the scrap boxes. And it just happens that last time I went to IKEA I got some RIBBA frames (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80078033)I think they work perfectly for scrap boxes.
LOVED this issue. I find myself looking at it over and over again. now i just need to create something myself!
I just flipped through that issue yesterday- wasn't that article just something else?
Saw this too and was totally smitten!!!
I just went to Martha Stewart dot com and typed in Darcy Miller in the search box....the first article is a close-up look at 61 shadow/scrap boxes she has done for her family......I am so inspired!! Such great ideas for getting these family mementos out of the albums and giving them center stage in a frame. Thanks for reminding me how talented she is!!
I saw these shadow boxes of hers in another post just yesterday but thank you for sharing the article here today. I do not see the magazine to buy here in England and that article looks incredible.
xx
I am definitely a sucker for MS, so that makes 2 Marthas that are my favorite things to read :) I cant wait to go and pick up the magazine
Me too! I torn those pages out for inspiration. I love the shadow boxes!
I just read this article this afternoon and I was soo impressed! I loved the idea of the family tree- both of my boys are getting one in their rooms this week! I had to go to martha's website immediately and print off the clip art before I forgot!
I'm a fan, too! I read that article a few days ago and it made my heart sing.
her spread was so eye-catching! i couldn't pass it by without a studying every detail.
ps. hm. i am trying to think of a time in my life when i've had rye bread.. pumpernickel: yes.. not a fan.. rye: nope. can't think of a one. should put that on my to do list.
I just finished watching her on martha's show (and going out to pick up the magazine)!! and look what I found here on your blog...more inspiration!!
The February issue is great for many reasons, but I loved the Darcy Miller 'Family' article too! I've made 3 scrapboxes since I saw it and have referred to it over and over. I was lucky enough to get a standby ticket and be in the audience today when she was on Martha's show with her family and all her scrapboxes, favors, etc. She's darling in every way!
I am Darcy Miller's second cousin, her mother, Madge and I spent our happy childhoods together and are still as close as sisters.
What is never said is that Madge Miller, Darcy's mom, has been doing travel journals
for years, documenting the Millers many trips to Europe. Her marvelous invitations have always been liberally sprinkled with confetti, sparkles, or what have you .
Not only that : Darcy's great grandfather was a prominent interior designer who worked with the original John Wanamaker deciding what antiques to bring over from Europe for the store. Darcy's great grandmother was in charge of the workroom-doing draperies, etc.
