babywearing / advice wanted

favorite bloggers with babes. olya / mindy gledhill (photo by justin) / sydney / naomi

hello friends. no babe yet. any day now (we hope)! i may as well take this empty space to ask you for some mama advice. i'd love to hear your thoughts on baby wearing. i am guessing it will be a necessity with number two. of course being a newbie i'm a bit intimidated by the long material wraps, but i hear they are awesome. (this striped wrap is super cute.) what have you liked? the sling, a cloth wrap (so many brands to choose from!) or something more user / daddy friendly like a structured clip-on and go ergo front pack? any baby carrying suggestions or brand favorites? any specific details i should look out for?

summer favorites / beauty edition

my days have been filled with summer fun; i am feeling like a real mom lately. every morning benj and i head to swimming lessons. i throw on a maxi skirt and a ponytail for the occasion, we run errands and to the library and then grab a celebratory happy meal to eat at the park on a whim. (he jumped off the diving board!!) life is oh so lovely. a summer wedding is coming up and the traditional MS bike ride is right around the corner. family is visiting and then it will be the fourth of july before we know it! i will be dipping in and out of blogging all summer long. for now, here are a few favorites from my quick summer beauty routine. do tell, what are you loving lately?

+ bobbi brown long-wear cream eye shadow is my go-to swipe-on and out the door fix.
+ dermalogica skin refining masque is a part of my weekly bathing regimen.
+ as is baking soda as my cheap body scrub exfoliant.
+ bath and body works makes a decent self-tanner for my poor legs that rarely see the sun.
+ sephora sells benefit bad gal lash in a mini travel size which i love.
+ moroccan oil (also available in trial size) smells amazing and really does help heal the hair.
+ fresh sugar lemon body lotion is light with just the right amount of citrus.
+ clinique chubby moisturizing lip stick in whole lotta honey is the perfect nude shade and gives a nice moist mwwaaahhh without any sticky shine; i seriously love this stuff.
+ am thrilled with these sweet button-covered ponytail holders.
+ i'm convinced–for us fair freckled friends–bobbi brown carries the best bronzing powder out there. and this stuff lasts forever.

feeling romancey / midnight in paris review

my sisters and i went to see midnight in paris last night after spending the evening listening to live music under twinkly lights at my cute cousin's wedding. it was so nice to be out on a summer evening with everyone we love. i love getting dressed up, seeing dan hold babies, drinking lemonade poured by fancy waiters, watching my parents mingle, meeting up with old friends who remember me from my younger years. there is somehow a comfort in being around familiarness. eating wedding food and swaying to music.

it was a gorgeous event; there were fabric flower garlands! hanging lanterns and pom poms! clothespinned snapshots spiraling around the trunks of trees! mossy monograms on iron gates! wood stumps as cake stands! soft colorful shades of budding peonies and fresh floppy petaled blooms! a lacy ruffled wedding gown and a sharp grey suit! shades of grey and and pops of yellow! even a giant oreo cake for the oreo buffet! (her fave!) personal details around every corner. i love a good wedding. i love young love.

so we were in the mood for a romantic chick flick, the perfect thing for four sisters to see. i had no idea what this woody allen film was about. i didn't care. a box of jr. mints, a dark theater and a girl's night. i'm happy. my sis passed along black licorice and hushed our chatter. the opening credits were like the best slide show of the iconic (and everyday) places in paris, the steps you've taken and wish to go back to. have you seen it? what did you think!?

my artsy side (the side that wished i had majored in art history) was swooning the entire time. i loved all the fun references, the interesting plot and owen wilson's charm (and robert redford haircut). the storyline was sweetly amusing and clever and thought-provoking. and everyone wears darling clothes (notice the skinny belts and button-up shirt dresses). this flick is not for everyone, but i'd recommend seeing it without doing too much research on it. the surprises are fun, i love how the movie pulls you in. if you are a lover of the arts, paris, and / or owen wilson, you are in for a pleasant surprise.

p.s. speaking of love, i've been falling in and out of love with houses all week long. (the house hunt is still going strong.)

p.s.s. tune in tomorrow for my favorite peanut butter cookie recipe ever. did i just say peanut butter and paris in the same post? hello matchmaker.

my wild cleaning project spills over & other midnight ramblings

hello again. i hope you had a lovely weekend. i'm still weekend-ing since i am knee deep in random goods (and bads) from my friday night project: project closet clean-out. don't you love when friday night projects have a mind of their own?! i told dan last night that it looks like we are moving and taking only the lame stuff. however, i am happy to report that my closets have clear bins (properly labeled) inside of them. i couldn't be more thrilled! my shoes can breathe again and i have a place for year-round holiday items. i even organized my too-cute-to-toss gift bags by size. this kind of organization is big for an apartment dweller, you have to be ever so clever about in-house storage space.

on another note. i was amazed how the all-encompassing message at ALT kept coming to me loud and clear. it didn't surprise me. the secret of blogging is all about content. great blog content! fresh content! new and insanely wonderful content. lovely, beautiful, inspiring, humorous content! raw content that speaks with your own unique voice! keep it new / keep it fun / keep it real. this whole idea has given me pause. i tend to agree with it. however i wonder what people (in general) consider fresh. how can content be considered fresh if its been borrowed once or twice in blogland? i'm not so sure if that falls under fresh content. however, that doesn't make me love those types of blogs any less. i love knowing what's hip and trendy and making it's way around blog-land, because usually it's super cool. there is definitely some fun in knowing what's floating around. can someone be bothered by someone re-posting her post if her own original post was already re-posted? is blog content only fresh if the photos were snapped by the author and the words straight from her own heart? does it count as fresh if you've taken someone's idea and then recreated it for yourself? what about do-it-yourselves? can those still be fresh even though everyone else is making those same crafty holiday wreaths too?

hmmm. thoughts to discuss. do tell..
what pulls you into a blog? photos / words / similarity to you / artsy images / real life stories?
what makes you subscribe? what does fresh content mean to you? what are your favorites?

project thankful, round two

some of you may remember my online thankful project last year (view round one here). i appreciated your submissions and thankful sentiments so much, i want to bring it back for 2010. you're each invited to contribute thoughts of thankfulness as the month goes by. this thanksgiving season i want to focus on the things that mean the most. an attitude of gratitude, as they say.

here are the project details: tell me something you are thankful for. whatever it might be right now. it can be big, it can be small. lengthy or short and sweet, share it aloud. this project will be open until thanksgiving day for your comments. (use the sidebar button for easy access!) feel free to post as many expressions of gratitude in this comment box, whenever you think of them. i will be posting my own thankful thoughts throughout the month in the comment section as well. i hope you'll join me in this endeavor and i hope you enjoy reading what others have to say. thankfulness is contagious. catch it.

thanks for playing along.

p.s. if you ordered something from my shop last week, it's in the mail today! thank you.

guest posting today.

...it holds my life in its hands. the home is where i clean out my fridge when the new groceries come in. wherein i introduce the new yogurts to the few that are still left. i separate the string cheeses and slice apples for baggies. the home is where i have cookies on top of the fridge and colorful cereal bowls lined up in a row. home is where the laundry lives...

read my entire guest post today over on the lovely website, Bloom. am delighted to be apart of their latest series about a subject i hold dear, home. it was nice to sit awhile and jot down my thoughts about what home means to me. the fact that i have control over creating this space is a pretty amazing responsibility, full of possibilities.

do tell, what are some magic touches you add to your home?

i need a mini sewing machine.

question of the day. do you know of any awesome simple sewing machines? the kind that are built for non-experienced semi-crafters like myself? i just need one to sew straight lines through scrapbook paper. i know this is not revolutionary to any of you scrapping / sewing extraordinaires, but i'm a newbie at this. and i'm taking baby steps. i'd love to know your tips, reviews and/or links about a basic machine that you could teach a child how to use. i'm serious about being an über beginner and have no shame. i have to start somewhere! am hoping to expand my endeavors for christmas crafts.

p.s. wishing you a happy birthday, mom. (have you heard that she just finished writing a western novel? how cool is that? she continues to teach me lessons and inspires me to try new things with no fear. to jump at opportunities. and if none approach us, to create our own windows of opportunity and leap through them with gusto. thus, the urge to learn to sew.)

buried treasure

this weekend i took all my pent-up energy and raided my closet while benji was napping and dan was biking. i gave away everything i never wear. i breathed new life into the stuff that i thought couldn't work. i made breathing space between my hangers. i stumbled upon cute white linen pants that are completely non-practical but maybe perfect for something this summer. and i realize i never wear red. the exception being red shoes. i felt fifteen again with my whole closet contents in categorized heaps on my bed. boy does it feel good to promise myself i'll never be a slob again. and it's wonderful to have nieces to save the oh, this is too cute to get rid of items for. (it helps knowing my best-of-this-decade clothes are going to a good home.) they can even toss it if they want to and i can make-believe they are wearing it to soccer camp; we're all the happier.

i discovered a few pretty pieces of jewelry while unearthing dusty makeup brushes, itty vials of perfume and clinique samples ripped from magazines in a forgotten dresser drawer. i've always been a minimalist for accessories but have a newfound love for the way they can put a fancy twist on my mama wardrobe of jeans and cardigans. i want to revive my jewelry collection. so now i have four or five assorted jewelry boxes spilling their contents on my dining room table ready for serious sorting. do tell, how do you store your jewelry? and what about hair accessories? not that i have many, but my headbands are always just hanging out. i'd love to hear your accessory suggestions.

coming up this week..
my sister's famous soft gingersnap recipe to love.
a few motivation for mothers articles to inspire.
an alice in wonderland birthday party to amaze.

going on a camera hunt

suddenly last weekend, my camera died. yes, my dear old camera is kaput. its soul is still in there, but it's been acting funny. (a little like old yeller. please raise your hand if you watched old yeller too many times to count while you were in elementary school. why did the school board think that movie was a good choice? why not parent trap or calamity jane? i blame that movie for my fears and suspicions of big dogs.) i am still hoping my camera will take another gasp. sure, it's an oldie and i complained about its painfully slow shutter speed every time i took a picture, but still i loved that trusty sony sidekick. remember all our good times together?! oh i am sad. and i'm sure there will be a thousand amazing photo ops while i wait for a new camera to join the team.

after the mourning period, i'll muster up the courage to wrap my head around the task of finding a new camera. i want to research just the right one to place in my palm and in front of my little one's face, to take on roadtrips and cloud hunts, for birthday parties and quiet mornings. so i ask of you, please steer me in the right direction. the canon rebel xsi and the canon G10 and G11 have been highly recommended for my type of shooting. (and when i say my type of shooting, i mean completely non-professional. just a wannabe.) thoughts? do tell, what kind of camera do you use?

my one big requirement, it must go click, click, click.
snapping rapid pictures takes my breath away.

airplane ride + baby

in a few weeks we are taking a family vacation. a real family vacation. flying in an airplane and everything. i can hardly wait. i already have my suit packed. we've been wanting to introduce benji to the beach since he was tiny. (and i've been wanting to re-introduce myself to pinkberry since my last spoonful.) we lived in southern california for a year, so there are some hot spots i definitely want to re-visit (hello, plums cafe!) but i'd love to know your favorite things to do with kids in california.

please feel free to leave me any advice about taking a toddler on his first airplane ride too. am hoping for the best, planning for the worst. please tell me we can handle a short airplane ride sans handheld devices. unless you count crayola wonder markers & coloring books. that's about as savvy as we get around here.

come back soon for today's giveaway post.

when i find out my sister is coming to town

and packing along her hubby and three cuties, i bust out the candy bowls, my secret stash of sweets, the must-have-on-hand brownie mix, and the basket of games. (speaking of which, our game department is suffering. do tell, what is your family favorite?) am still hunting down any hello kitty stickers and/or princess paraphernalia. it is bound to be a flurry of fun. this morning my only saturday plan was clean craft closet. am giddy to scribble that out and substitute play with nieces. wishing you a happy pancake saturday morning.

it is noted that i'd be able to find said girlie stickers much easier if indeed this closet were clean and tidy. its times like these when i say oh bother in my best winnie the pooh accent and run off to enjoy the fun at hand.

the camp out

this was a fourth of july celebration to remember. we were lucky enough to spend time with our families and soak up lots of fresh air outdoors in the mountains. we ate piles of pancakes, sung fun songs, played silly games, got dirt underneath our fingernails, smelled like campfire and introduced the small one to what independence day is all about.

being together.

when you make one stop and that one stop is costco it means you find yourself buying the largest jar of sauerkraut in the world. you might reconsider, but knowing your family and dan's hot dog roast, you don't want to disappoint. gladly, it was well received. thanks to jacque for getting the darn thing open. and thanks to pete for taking it off my hands (so glad you and your friends love sauerkraut and who knows, miss anna may start craving it in her third trimester).

these sweet photos were snapped by my bro-in-law, scott who really should start up a photography blog. i could've posted a hundred more of his shots.

since we arrived a day or so late to the annual camp out, we benji got the most glorious hello i've ever seen. we pulled up and parked. and suddenly dozens of children literally came out of the woodwork, running over to us, yelling our names in their squeaky sunshine voices. the cousins club gave us an official welcome. all asking questions and giving hugs and telling their tales and showing off their beaded crafts and giving benji loves all at once. that settled it, i love being an aunt. the warm welcome starting things off with a bang and gave me the biggest warmest heart i've had in a long time. it made the loooong drive and all the packing and all the did-i-remember-the's so worth it. next time i am feeling low, that big hello will be my go-to memory. i loved every bit of it.

family camp outs are the best.
i think it's unanimous.

camping with kids checklist.
i've received a few emails inquiring about camping w/ kids, so here goes. i am a novice about camping with small ones, but i've learned a thing or two from my older sister. heidi and her husband have camped with their - oh so darling - 4 kids (in tents, mind you) every year since their family began. this year included her two year old twins. if they can do it, so can you. here are some ideas i picked up.

details. let loose and be flexible. give the kids each a place to sit. heidi brought her itty bitty princess camp chairs; perfect for the girls to roast marshmallows and minimized quarrels over where to sit. i brought up our small portable high chair for benji (it was perfect for keeping him from swallowing sticks). use off wipes to keep bugs away from li'l ones. bring sunscreen and lots of it. set up your tent in daylight and put the rainfly on, just in case. put a port-a-crib inside your tent for the baby (keeping him off the ground means he feels warmer and is lot more like home). pack all the baby food / spoons / bibs together in a separate ziplock gallon size baggie, it will be no nonsense to fix up when he gets hungry and anxious. oh and there are even coleman battery-operated fans available to attach inside your tent, perfect for hot afternoon naps. what will they think of next.

gear. invest in excellent gear in the first place, you'll use it for years. my dad got his coleman stoves in the 70's and still loves cooking bacon, warming cocoa and making oatmeal each and every year with it. good hiking shoes + muddy flipflops are my footwear of choice. pack warm ski socks to sleep in. take along rain jackets. oh and bring an extra tarp; chances are, you'll use it.

play. prepare a box full of kid friendly games beforehand. my mom loads a tote full of magnifying glasses, stories, wooden pop guns, coloring books, bubble gum, madlibs, and treasure hunt ideas for collecting bugs and seeking out the beauty in nature. my bro-in-law jacque always designs the best games for our family; this year was a full rendition of family feud. a little preparation goes a long way. and when all the other games have fizzled, the guys seem to be endlessly entertained playing what can we burn next.

work. this year we went green and used a lot less paper products. heidi brought up a giant tub (for washing dishes) and a fantastic large mesh bag for loading clean dishes in to dry. use a Sharpie to mark your items (you can divy up later). when it's time to pick up, play fairy godmother and tap each kid on the head with a stick and give them a special job to do. when the adults are busy taking down tents, folding tarps and stuffing sleeping bags, give someone the task of entertaining the kids with songs, games and stories. grandmas are overly qualified and very good when surrounded by grandchildren. this is their forte. let them have at it.

misc. bring along special treats from the bulk foods, pull them out at nighttime, when you're in need of a prize or as a perfect bribing mechanism. tie up a hammock (my brother's seriously brilliant idea). keep chapstick and kleenex at the ready. plan for the unexpected. brush up on your current events for lively conversation. be sure to pack a sweatshirt, a cozy blanket for the campfire, a bandana for crazy hair, a notebook, a camera, and a flashlight. and don't forget the sauerkraut.

if you have a camping tip or two, do tell. happy camping.

pack after reading

this book is jammed full of fantastic travel tips. my mom let me borrow it and i read it cover to cover in an hour. packed in this small pocket-sized book are hundreds of useful ideas on making your next vacation a complete success start to finish.

i loved the idea of putting all of your essentials (toothbrush, soap, shampoo, razor, etc.) in a nalgene bottle for a camping trip. i also liked the idea of using a gardener's tote as your airplane carry-on (perfect with plenty of pockets). keep your earrings in a film canister, keep q-tips in an empty tape cassette case, rebind your travel books with a spiral binding for easy reading, divvy up money in envelopes for each day to keep on budget...

do you have any travel tips? do tell.

do tell: blog books

so here is another question for you, my smart and on the ball internet friends. do you wake up in a cold sweat wondering if your blog will still be there in the morning? (don't tell me i'm the only one worried about this...)

i must admit, i have done nothing to preserve this blog. not even a giant cut & paste into a word document. gasp. i know. it's shameful. with all the guts + glory i've spilled into this online diary, you'd think that i would have thought this through, color-coded a fire proof plan, analyzed it a billion times and created some sort of method for safe-keeping my blog. but i really don't know where to start. i've heard of blurb books, but wanted to explore all my options first. do you have any ideas for blog story storage? if so, do tell.

update: thank you, celia. looks like she has done all the blog book research for us.

do tell: birthday cakes

the man of my dreams is having a birthday this weekend and i have high hopes to bake him a delicious cake. in all truth, i'd love to buy one from a dainty bakery, if i knew of one in this town, but he loves it when i bake from scratch. he loves when ordinary things come together; flour, eggs, sugar to make something tasty. it reminds him of the pioneer days. and anything from the pioneer days makes him happy. he also loves it when i make do rather than spend his hard earned cash. therefore, i'll be using my pioneer ingredients in my pioneer kitchen-aid.

does the perfect birthday cake exist? i'd love to bake a cake that is not too complicated, won't collapse, will look pretty and taste delisch. is that too much to ask? (christie, if all else fails, will you come to idaho and bake dan an army tank cake? it's really warm and tropical here and i have a giggling li'l boy who wants to meet you.)

know of a tried and true cake recipe? please, do tell. comment with a link or email me the recipe. i promise i'll make it worth your while and blog all about my birthday caking creation. thanks.
