09 August 2010

a two part post.

weekend review + big winners to announce. thus, the two part post.

part one.  this weekend was full. completely summerfull. which was lovely. we watched summer rainclouds roll in and then roll out. i snapped drive-by photos. i made a little movie of my little boy unloading the dishwasher. he hands me clean utensils one by one. it's the cutest thing i've ever seen. if he accidentally grabs two forks, he'll put one back. now i know how parents get their kicks. he has completely changed my attitude about doing dishes. (and most everything else in the world.)

we went out for an event and i attempted to rock the smoky eye (thanks to a great how-to in a library book) and came home for a mission impossible marathon (again thank you, local library). saturday morning, i got to read a magazine and listen to my ipod while relaxing by the pool, which is my version of bliss. this being my reward for an early morning work out. i was channeling a wee bit of eleanor saturday morning. eleanor roosevelt says, "You must do the things you think you cannot do." which for me, meant walking into an exercise class called butts and guts. and staying the whole time. the clever title alone makes me want to lie on the couch with kardashian reruns. however everytime i think about losing this baby weight it is like a personal invitation to a pity party. which is pathetic. a pity party never has party favors or pretty pom pom puffs. there are no happy guests mingling or elton john cds playing. there are no fresh flowers or coordinating color themes. pity parties are lame which is my new motivation to exercise. it's working.

i still have bouts of mourning sickness mixed with a general overwhelming sadness about dear ones grieving and dealing with their own experiences of loss and heartbreak. like ocean waves, empathy has taken over a bit and i cannot stop feeling a new sensitivity for what other people are going through. i am much more aware of feelings (mine and others') than ever before. which i hope is life's way of teaching me to be a better, kinder, soft hearted person. these days i am consistently attempting to choose to be positive and cheerful and optimistic when it never used to be a conscious choice. i am continuing to heal from the huge upset and have buried myself in new projects, crafts and thick library books. thanks to those of you who have been so thoughtful; i had no idea fellow blogging friends would reach out and lift my spirits so much.

part two. thank you for the awesome feedback about the new collection of mini diaries. i can always count on you, collectively, as the official cheerleading squad when it comes to my crafty endeavors. i owe all my mini mart shop success to you blog readers, as i am not one who ever branches out to advertise for reals. a heartfelt thank you for the sweet comments and for spreading the word.

as for my giveaway, i've got a few big weekend winners to announce.
ami, I love how these make you think of some positive things for the day! Just lovely.
kendra, I love the youthful print diaries! They are so cute! I love reading your blog! Thanks!
amanda laplante, A classic kind of girl, I can't help but be drawn to the sophisticated prints.
and laura, how perfectly pint-sized & lovely! (i am a sucker for all things mini...)

congrats! winners, please contact me directly with your shipping details.

stay tuned. this week i'll be featuring a handful of guest posts which include a generous giveaway along with more incredible how-to's.

12 October 2009

weekend wrap up and a winner

good morning monday.

hope you had a nice weekend. am feeling happy to be home and happy to have had a li'l getaway. it's good to get away. we packed up to venture to the annual trailing of the sheep festival in sun valley, idaho. this event involves three main things; celebration of sheep, shearing of sheep and walking of sheep down main street. how could this not be a perfect excuse to take a roadtrip.

we witnessed the wonders of wool. folks wearing wool, fingers spinning wool and soap carved into sheep shapes. there was a parade of sheep clomping down the street and bagpipes playing and dancers with pretty costumes and spectators chatting, bundled up, eating lamb kebobs, lamb stew and lamb sandwiches. which seems pretty ironic to me. but anyhow, i won't get into that.. i was just happy we made a nice tribute to the sheep.

we've been talking about coming to this fest ever since we saw the pbs special on it last year at the hospital while i was recovering from my c-section. (funny how things like thetvshowyouwatched35hoursafteryougavebirth stay with you.)

i'm so glad my parents could meet up with us, it is always fun to spend time together. my favorite is watching benji interact with them. his whole face lights up. i loved taking my mom in town to each of the gift shops i've fallen in love with over the years. we discovered an adorable new shop with a plethora of pretty cards, fancy dishes, exquisite candles and a singing yellow bird in a fancy vintage cage in the corner. it is pretty awesome to browse greeting cards with my mom, for she is the one who instilled the obsession.

okay, onto blog business. the lucky random winner of last week's giveaway was number five. which means deidra, you've won. enjoy your spooky stationery!!!

sheep shots to come. stay tuned.

morning friends

my sunshine boy. oh how fun hanging out with a one year old can be.

good morning. there are a billion things to blog about. so i better begin. the first day of autumn was serious business around here. the cool air hit and the jackets came out to play. i love scarf weather and am stocking up on chili supplies for our annual homemade cook-off. my li'l one and i are planning to lunch with his pal, paxton. he turns one today. such sweet wee friends. i bought candy corn in the bulk foods at my grocery store and loaded them into my new anthro bowl. thank you, whit. am hoping they'll last into october. am unboxing my sweaters and boxing up everything else in this place. practically. benji's arms are suddenly long enough to reach up onto every surface of every table. it's hard to be frustrated when your cute tiny tot is up on his tippy toes blindly swiping all the papers on your desk to and fro. am realizing i have a lot of non-absolutely-necessary stuff lying around. benji is aiding in the process of project: fall clean-up.

have you noticed the new feature in blogger? search no more for a Search Bar element. hooray. seriously, your blog search bar is your new best friend. i use mine all the time (and hope you do too). it is so handy if you're wondering when you wrote that post about mint brownies or that one silhouette project or the time you had cupcakes in the big apple or the post describing memories of your mom. yes sir, the blog search bar is a must-have. if you're set up in blogger, simply go to customize / layout / add a gadget / search box. you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. you're welcome.

and now, a big fat thank you for taking my pop quiz seriously. i am so happy to have a wealth of information there. thanks for your thorough answers. to say merci in a proper manner, three of you will receive the first mini diaries of the autumn season. (they're back from the printshop and so pretty. am currently binding them! almost available in the shop.) the winners are: lovely lindsay, rachel, and sonya audrey. congrats and please email me your shipping addresses.

have a lovely wed-nes-day. xo.

07 September 2009

shop update + winners

hope you've had a lovely Labor Day.

this weekend was full of good things. for now, i'll divulge my delights in paper. i happily went on a region-wide paper hunt and found an adorable array of paperie. not to mention an amazing cupcake place. anyway, i scooped up an armful (paper that is, i had just one cupcake) and brought them home with me.

it's tradition to bring purchases home and spread them out like diamonds. i love seeing all the designs together. i thought they needed to start mingling quick, they looked so good together. i punched a few into rounds for gift tags. i then decided they would make a pretty garland for a small space instead, so i strung them together like best friends forever. of course, if i had a grand hallway i would make dozens of them to droop delightfully into criss crossed swags to swing in a warm welcome. ta da.

and since you were oh so kind to comment the day of my big blog anniversary, i randomly picked (or rather, dan randomly picked) numbers for a giveaway. and the 3 winners are melancholysmile, linn and tawnya. you'll each receive a pretty garland + ribbon (if you prefer, you can use them as gift tags). congrats! please email me your shipping address marta[at]martacards.com.

p.s. new halloween things + downloads have been stocked in the mini mart.

p.p.s. hope you like this collection of papers, they will showcase as the covers for my next batch of mini diaries set to come out next month.

31 July 2009

you're all winners in my book.

thank you for contributing so many great ideas for a picnic! am thinking i should pack a picnic lunch in the not-so-distant future. i loved reading all of your pack-along favorites. a big fabulous congratulations to karie whose favorite item to take on picnics is rice krispie treats! mmm. mm. couldn't agree more. enjoy your darling basket. and thanks to everyone who played along.

28 July 2009

giveaway: allora rosebuds

yes, it's true. a spontaneous tuesday giveaway has arrived.

my dear friend jessica (whom i met in california over homemade tacos) is one of the sweetest gals i know (and is mama to two of the cutest boys on the planet). this weekend, i discovered, she'd packaged up a fabulous handmade headband from her new etsy shop, allora handmade, just for me. it is made with a stretchy thin headband and darling fun fabrics rolled into pretty flowers. and to be frank, i am thrilled with it. (even daring to shoot some self portraits).

leave a comment to enter to win a headband of your own. so pretty in pink. i'll announce the winner by midnight tonight on this post. allora handmade is kindly offering 15% off to customers throughout the week, just mention m.writes in the notes to seller. (i am especially fond of her floral fashions, rose buds + pretties.)

m. review. am thinking the bright buds are lovely + lively (adding a much needed kick to my wardrobe of plain colored tees & jeans). am loving the fact that the headband stays put and yet still, no headband headache (which usually has me tossing the thing like a frisbee the second we get home from church). am also delighted the dainty accessory is unique, well-made and just the right size for my short hairstyle (am a simple girl; am slowly working up to sarah jessica parker type birdwear). oh, to have big bouncy curls like my friend jess.. still, you can't waste your days wishing your strands away, so you might as well embrace them and then get dolled up.

thank you, jess.

thank you to everyone who participated in this giveaway;
the lucky lady is melanie anne. congrats to you!

27 July 2009

monday again

hello world.

the weekend was fantastic. all warm weather and fresh berries. although our anticipated house guests had to cancel, we attempted to have some fun anyhow. which included: pancakes, twice (i swear this is the summer of the pancake for us), watching the end of the tour de lance thanks to versus.com, baby swim lessons, logo designing, a date night and movie, sunday naps, some reading, project clean the house and a lot of fresh fruit.

which all adds up to a very happy me. i relish the thought that the voluptuous blueberry is a super food (and am hoping it's nutritional value saves me from my super sugary cereal choices). i even opted out of a jell-o pudding pop last night for vanilla yogurt with a boatload of berries on the top. now when does that ever happen in my life; never. i feel so fancy to fill a ramekin with berries and dollop it with something white and whippy. in my eyes the ramekin is the beginning of a gourmet lifestyle. it's a little bit of elegant paris du jour in my regular idaho life. it's basically the prequel to buying yourself a one-way ticket to france.

onto blog business. the winner, oh how i wish i could pick more than one. beck, you are my random winner for last week's giveaway. congrats! please email me your choice of cute paper clock and shipping details. hooray. the weekly summer giveaways will be coming to an end this week, so tune in.

20 July 2009

home again

ooh la la. am feeling much refreshed and encouraged and happy. we are home from vacation. all in one piece. but shh.. am not telling anyone yet. to have one more day of vacation to unpack, do laundry, listen to voicemail, answer emails, stock up on groceries, and let my boy play wildly among the luggage is essential in this house.

but i couldn't not tell you. i had to log on to say hello, i missed you and of course, to announce the winner of the mini chalkboards. classy drifter, you are my lucky random number. her mini goals: find the perfect summer skirt, read three more books, make a beautiful 3 layer cake. amen. i would love to make a beautiful 3 layer cake myself, benji boy is turning one in one month + five days. can hardly believe it.

am glad to be back. i think my heart grew fonder. i have lists to list and tales to tell. and more photos too (thought you might like this li'l peek). plus i unexpectedly met some fabulous blogland friends too. sun valley, idaho is magic. it was awesome. dreamy, in fact. more persuasive speeches later.

14 July 2009

still life before the storm

this is how my saturday felt idaho feels sometimes. still and simple.

saturday was full of goodness. dan biked a hundred miles. benj and i palled around. we all celebrated with shaved ice. mango + coconut to start the summer off. then we took a farmroad drive while the boy napped (was happy to have my camera along), nestled in for a good read, purchased pink polish (i can always find something else to buy at Target) and enjoyed a bowl of tortilla soup (am still loving everything with cilantro). i picked up a pile of new mags at barnes & noble and sifted through each one at a lovely little round table. i walked out empty handed with a brain full of mush. marvelous mush. ideas upon ideas galore. the nice thing about living in a small town is, there aren't too many options for a saturday night. which i am coming to appreciate. little did i know, these skies would well up and burst with a theatrical electrical storm late into the night, just to turn up the juice in said small town. it was quite a show.

other things on my mind.

01. first thing's first, the lucky winner of the pretty pouch is julia. congrats!! please email me your shipping address and such. i thoroughly enjoyed reading how so many of us are carrying burt's bees, lip gloss and regular ol' chapstick in our clutches. hooray for smoochable lips.

02. and a big thank you to those who purchased a li'l something at the sidewalk sale yesterday. your goodies will be shipped out today along with some sweet scalloped gift tags.

03. on another note, i am in the middle of three very good reads. each of them are highlighter worthy and poolside friendly. contentment by maria covey cole (uplifting and inspiring), daring to be yourself by alexandra stoddard (i devour her books, her love for loveliness reminds me of my mother), the recent issue of cookie magazine (an endless resource of great ideas) and i just checked out this book, have found it intriguing too. am hoping to finish it while in sun valley this weekend.

04. i like reading books for a lot of reasons. because reading opens my eyes to new things, it makes me realize i'm not so different, makes me feel like i belong, makes me feel like the world is a big, great place, makes me feel empathetic, makes me aware of situations i've never heard of before, all in all reading makes me want to be a newer, better, greater person. while simultaneously reminding me (ever so kindly) of words i should add to my blogging vocabulary. such as auspicious. or bemusing. or the phrase phonetically correct. lets just say when i read i realize there are a lot of ways i could be pushing myself more. a lot of things out there to do, to dream, to learn. which brings me to number five.

05. to make a long story short, i've been enrolled in this fantastic 8-week online e-course: unravelling by susannah conway, who lives in england. (what could be more charming than my new life guru living in the historic town of bath, england? i can only say her locale aloud with a british accent. because indeed, everything is more floral, more dewy, more dainty, so twee and full of lush hillsides and pretty words and pretty people and romanticness and subtle gestures and expressive characters and lacy charm in england. no wonder this woman is full of good ideas. i hope this wanderlust will rub off on me.) her course is all about seeking the self and finding out what's inside and what type of art, photographs, ideas, etc. come out while looking inwards. as fate would have it, i happened upon this workshop simply by winning a giveaway (talk about a big hip hip). auspicious signs all about. and now i'm enthralled and ultimately so happy to be a part of a creative group. i'll be sharing some of the things i work on as i trudge through and attempt to pull my heart out and pin it to my sleeve. and as of yesterday, you can take a peek at my current photos via my new flickr page which will be flooded with images these next 8 weeks.

06. am headed to pack and re-pack and then cross off my list of packed items. it's true, i'm really like that. i should have this process memorized by now. i ought to get a medal for all the times i've packed for a weekend getaway. am thanking heavens am only packing for one little one at the moment. sooner or later i'll be rolling dozens of socks and finding a billion shoes and three hundred toothbrushes. not really, but someday it might seem that way. therefore i'm enjoying the simplicity in taking one babe and one husband and running for the hills in one car with one trunk loaded with a billion things that we may or may not need.

07 July 2009

hello tuesday winners.

congratulations to the winners; ellen, meghan and erica!! please email me your details. thanks to the rest of you for being so nice. more goodness coming real soon. right after i recover from a very happy fourth.

29 June 2009

charmed, i'm sure

and the lovely charm necklace goes to miss LeniStav. congrats. thanks for playing along last week. i loved reading your charming comments. to those of you still hankering for a pretty prize, there will be two giveaways this week. seriously good ones. i can't wait to ring in july with a bang. stay tuned.

mm. yes, you summed it up quite nicely, leni.

22 June 2009

monday roll out

a few things to mention for monday.
am rolling out the carpet of my mind.

01. the winner from last week's giveaway is melissa. congrats, you've won a set of handmade stationery! please email your shipping info and choice of typewriter or tv set design to me.

02. truthfully i didn't mind all the rain this weekend. it has made everything so lush and green. the sunshine moments were all the more gloriful after buckets of rain. not a real word i realize, but seriously, it's exactly what i mean.

03. was happy to read an article about the making and meaning behind moleskin notebooks from a magazine my dad sent me in the mail. he is the best. he has given me a handful of these journals with favorite collectors stamps glued to the cover. not only is he completely thoughtful, he is crafty too.

04. am definitely digging happy tape, papercut maps and this japanese quilt. not to mention, these beautiful blind impression cards.

05. another gloriful find from the bulk foods; army guy gummies. when i saw them at the store, i had to smile and scoop some into a sack in honor of my man. doesn't every little boy dream of growing up to be gi joe? they turned out to be a great father's day snack as we walked along the local waterfalls and fed the ducks yesterday.

if i were planning my nine year old boy's birthday party, i'd be tempted to theme the whole event around these sweet troops. i can just imagine them on a tray, piled high in cellophane bag barracks with camouflage ribbon tied on the tops. the treats would be a fun reward after the boys wrapped up their water gun fight. i'd serve kool-aid in canteens, plan a water balloon surprise attack and a bazooka bubblegum blowing contest. at the end of the war party each boy would take home an army knapsack, embroidered with their initials. in my dreams, i can sew. it would be filled with army approved contents; a treasure map, a compass, a small notebook and a swiss army knife. i suppose the gummies would have to get eaten quick, they'd probably be considered contraband.

i told dan i had to get a picture before we gobbled the guys up. dan set them out, lining them up on his leg (his favorite faded corduroys) in a fashion that gave me a glimpse of exactly the little boy he was.

15 June 2009

winner

thank you everyone for participating in the baby dress giveaway. the random winner is landrylee. hip hip hooray, you've won! congratulations. please email me your favorite dress design along with your shipping address. more giveaway goodness this thursday. and if you're still paying attention, there will be a speedy spontaneous giveaway tomorrow morning. can't wait.

09 June 2009

weekend recap

this weekend, dan and 'the boys' took their annual wilderness adventure trip. also known as: the boyz trip. this year they road biked all over southern utah, getting in some heavy training for the upcoming lotoja ride.

they mapped out a route, slept in sleeping bags, rode grueling hills for four days and went out for steaks & shakes to celebrate. a perfect boys weekend. (images by tom, the only brother who brought a camera)

benj and i lucked out. we got to stay in and slumber party downtown. not much slumbering occurred though, lets be honest. the girls stayed up late and benj awoke two hours earlier than usual to see what all the fuss was about. i think he could smell my dad's granola baking. we got a lot in while dan was away; swimming sessions, a first trip to the zoo, monkey bars, the bird show, fruit smoothies, catching up with whit, and her new bike, exploring going green (although well worth it, it's not easy being green. hooray for those who make the effort, who make a difference despite the inconvenience). early morning walks, cream cheese and bagels, playing in the rain, kiwi salad, little molten cakes in ramekins, makeovers, swimsuits, lipstick overhaul with oma, a parade in the streets, an early morning photoshoot, warm sunshine at grandma shanna's, discussions of blog etiquette (i loved this post my mom wrote, she blogs best afterhours). and pete's hawaiian chicken+pineapple party on the patio.

it was heaven. and thank goodness, benji is suddenly back to his normal schedule. funny how even a baby knows what coming home is all about.

p.s. i thoroughly loved reading about your dream closets in thursday's giveaway. especially the closet containing cheese. or the one packed with post-its. how awesome and creative you are, i love it. and the fabulous fat squares go to: Zom! you've won. really, truly. congrats. giveaways are scheduled every thursday throughout june and july. hip hip.

01 June 2009

hello junebug

01. thanks everyone for chiming in with your flavorful comments on last week's giveaway. am so glad summer is officially in full swing and that corn on the cob is only twenty-five cents at my local grocery store. some people think you can't get anything for a quarter. i say you can get a lot; a giant gumball, a jelly bracelet, a fake tattoo, or corn on the cob. i'll have one of each please. the random winner is diana hulme. congrats! you've won the lovely letterpress cookbook. (and by the by, i love watermelon + rootbeer too. mmm.)

02. hooray for june, a month of summer sunshine. am writing out my to-dos and want-tos on my blank calendar page. if you want a freebie, simply click on this image, save and print. i love a simple clean slate to fill up with color-coded plans and parties.

03. june is looking like: more design projects, more recipes and tutorials, more giveaways, more write club, more time off for more adventures with my boys and perhaps my first online rummage sale. can't wait. thanks for reading. {have a few things piling up, posts might be a bit sporadic this week.}

happy monday + happy new calendar page.

26 May 2009

m. back

hello. hello. this memorial day weekend was practically perfect in every way. all thanks to the delightful family folk who made every day a party.

prepare yourselves for a serious outpouring of pictures. and i didn't even get a photo of everybody. mostly the iphoto upload is 90% of my child posing with another member of the family. this is what it comes down to when you become a parent. it's cliche. and i'm completely okay with it. i hope you had a nice weekend too. i have so much catching up to do; unpacking and uploading and breadbaking and bedmaking. lets get this weekend wrap up rolling.

this is a dorky self portrait. i can't help but be cheesy in front of a camera. it's a skill i am trying to undo. i never have any shots of myself at the end of our excursions, so i figured i may as well document the fact that i was really there. this is a very happy me at the anthropologie sale. i am trying on one of those cute floral hip headbands. it sadly did not end up in my shopping cart. what do we think? can i pull it off? frankly, when i shop for anything these days i think practical, pretty and price tag. and in the back of my mind is this question; could this retain it's shape if benji mauled it?

sweet baby sandals. i love that dan bought them for him without any sort of influence from me. it's moments like these when i am over the moon in love with my boys. our babe has obviously stolen dan's heart; the two went in to REI and made a purchase of baby tevas over camping gear, ski gear and/or bike gear. hooray for flipflops. benj, you are officially a part of the family. he wore them all of ten seconds. but still.

my mom and i are night owls. my dad and benj are morning friends. therefore, i get the best of both worlds. we woke up to a bit of my dad's version of crunchy granola suite. mmm. mmm.

i was so glad to visit the cemetary with my mom by my side. i love that she said, i don't need to come here to remember them. i remember them every day of my life.

more photos coming. a lot more.
the winner of last week's giveaway is ALFIE.
woohoo. congrats and enjoy your postcards.

18 May 2009

we have a winner

hello, my lucky charms. this one was super fun. how truly rad was all of your childhoods? very. i loved reading about your happy small worlds: the running free and the bike riding and the barbies and the roller skates and the sunshine and the otterpops and the mudpies and the cousins and the carefree long summer days of youth. (am delighted to report there was not a one that said their favorite thing about childhood was playing video games. yay! thank goodness.)

thank you for thinking up tiny soliloquies for me to read. i was tickled pink and impressed you were all up to the challenge. our random winner is lisa r. lewis. congrats! you've won your favorite art print from Den-10 Studio. please email me with your selection and shipping address.

tune in tomorrow, a darling bride spills her advice on making your wedding a personalized affair with flair. oooh, hers was just gorgeous. it's true, i'm a happily married woman in love with wedding details.

{i love weddings so much sometimes i wish birthdays were weddings. that should be the theme for my next birthday party; everyone arrive in a white frock with prom hair. we'll watch each other's wedding videos, devour bite size delectables and skim martha stewart wedding magazines. if i'm rich by then, i'll hire a dj for dancing on my kitchen linoleum. at the end of the evening, everyone goes home with a dainty bouquet. and a cute favor, of course. the valet will get your car. feel free to tip him, his name is dan.}

11 May 2009

i love hosting giveaways and discovering new artisans who are really good at what they do. i love putting their talents on display. there is just one downfall. the tragic thing about giveaways is that there can only be one winner.

i know i am.

oh and this weekend was awesome. saturday was dreamy. morning yoga. a day in the park, with no wind. wahoo. and cafe rio salad. the 1st official mother's day was magic. my boys outdid themselves. i woke up to a smiley happy baby boy and a pile of sliced strawberries, bananas and mangoes on my coconut french toast. my favorite. mm mmm. thank you, dan. we went to church and let benji sleep as we went on our weekly sunday drive. there is nothing like a warm car and cool breezes. the big blue skies were beautiful. will be posting photos of who we ran in to later. lets just say dan was in heaven and i was happy i had the camera.
