happy new year

wishing you & yours a happy new year.
cheers to you, my favorite online friends.

cheers to perhaps the best year of my life. we were blessed with memorable experiences that made me a stronger person... a healthy pregnancy, enjoying a trip to nyc, dan graduating law school, making a difficult decision to move, saying goodbye to friends, family & our hometown, moving to idaho, dan starting his new career, having our first baby, a surprise c-section for me, a short stay in the nicu for benji, creating a loving home for our healthy happy boy, becoming a mama, welcoming visitors, designing my website, selling diaries, discovering new places, making new friends, purchasing a washer & dryer... we have led a charmed life.

i am excited for the possibilities around the bend.
i have a few ideas up my sleeve for 09.
and as always, thanks for reading.

will be listening to auld lang syne by mairi campbell & dave francis tonight (a perfect song for after the ball drops) and to get the party started, will be dancing to fergie's labels or love. will be enjoying a fiesta of goodness, eating chicken tortilla soup with green chiles & cilantro (my new addiction, thanks to meg). and ringing in the new year with the boys.

celebrate the new year with pretty polaroids.

magazine rack reviews

shimmering streamers via marthastewart.com

my take on a few favorite mags of the month.

hit.
martha stewart living / january 09. the perfect new year guide to a fresh new start. fun new year's eve party ideas, a feature on martha's daily health regiment, a knitting section, a piece on floral arranging, and (my favorite) a fabulous look at creative spaces (desks cluttered and collages splattered). this one's a goodie. (and if you happen to make this pepperminty trifle, please share the details.)

miss. glamour / january 09. save your money and tune into britney's riveting documentary, britney: for the record instead. it seems to be playing 'round the clock on the tv sets at the gym. i'm even getting sick of it. please bring back my regularly scheduled anderson cooper.

tried + true. real simple / january 09. this magazine is made for new year resolutions. this issue is especially for those of us who are compulsive listers. if there were some sort of society, i'd jot down the meeting dates on my to-do list, my calendar and in my planner. and then a sticky note on the steering wheel.

pleasantly surprised. InStyle / january 09. bright ideas on every page. smeared with pretty powders, sweet shadows and luscious lip colors to inspire your makeup kit. i thought cute kate hudson's interview was blah but the surprise of a photo shoot with keri russell made it all worthwhile. she sports a beautiful mix of layers, which of course never cover her collarbone (her trademark). there is also a li'l clip from bobbi brown too. this issue is packed with punches.

special mention. Cookie / december-january issue. love this magazine. it's about time a hip mom & child magazine hit the stands. my heart stopped at page 150, a story about a place close to my heart, park city, utah. featured is a full page photo of dan's all time favorite pizza place, Davanzas. he drove many a-tourists there, once upon a time.

for safekeeping. martha stewart weddings / winter 09. wow. too many fun party ideas to pass up. an amazing wedding in the country, wherein the guests sign their names on squares of linen for a keepsake quilt. and chocolate banjos for favors. another wedding full of bright polka dots and darling fabric swatches. cute favors, amazing stationery, beautiful flowers... martha always does it up right.

enjoy the inbetween

well now where do we begin. i feel like it's been forever. wow. what a christmas. it really was so relaxing, lovely and all around perfect. a merry holiday. hope yours was too. you know you've had a fabulous time when you have no idea what day of the week it is until your husband has to head back to work to face the real world. only until new years day. i like this inbetween stage. it's a way to warm up to the new year.

speaking of warm up, this christmas was christmas of the coats for me. dan surprised me with much needed outerwear; a cute one for looking sunday best and a bomber one for every other day of the week. who says puff can't be chic? i am sure there will be loads of photos of me in my new puff because i'll be wearing it until may, when winter gets warmer.

my crowded cottage has been warmed by so much love. lots of movie watching, orange peeling and baby laughter has been going on. dan got band of brothers, i got dan in real life and benj got baby einstein, so we're all pretty happy lazing in front of the tube. when santa brought neil diamond in concert, he should have wrapped it in caution tape. i should have known neil would be staying for christmas brunch. yet his enthusiasm and florescently yellow shiny shirt with huge lapels only enhanced the flavor of our french coconut cinnamon toast.

and of course we bundled up for the annual christmas winter walk. i could hardly grumble seeing the gleam in dan's eye. i guess it's a tradition, even if it's snowstorming, especially if it's snowstorming outside. hmmm, no wonder i got a coat. santa is one smart cookie.

speaking of cookies, i am hauling them out. or at least freezing all of them. cleaning off my refrigerator doors, filing all the contents of my junk piles, throwing out all the expired coupons and bad pens, and getting serious about organization. no more random crap will be filling this house. i'm not going to be too sentimental this time around, i'm going to be cut throat. i'm feeling the '09 bearing down on me, so i have a new to do list: project clean house. this inbetween stage is there for a reason, must cleanse the palate and get of rid the old, the broken, the moldy, the rotten, the outdated, the i'm sick of looking at this, (mainly it's just piles of paper) before the new year (new to do lists, new magazines, new projects, new goals, new ideas..) come riding in. seriously i can't wait for the new year, though this has been a great one. i just love a fresh start, don't you? come back soon, i have a magazine review in the wings.

happy inbetween days.

22 December 2008

have a roly poly christmas

so i learned a few things over the weekend. read on if you'd like.

point one. it seems that the snow falls sideways here in idaho. it's true. the wind blows a blustery winter scene outside and makes you feel like you're on a movie set and more importantly, never want to leave your house again. even to go get the mail, but the chances of getting a fun christmas card overpowers me, so i eventually bundle up, get out and open up my mailbox with my feet sunken in snow. it's always worthwhile though, i haven't yet been disappointed. my sister heidi even mailed me some of her famous cookies. and you can never have too many christmas cookies on the counter, especially if they're the gingerbread type. mmm. for the most part, the bear cub and i are hibernating til winter is over. we've got plenty of cookies to pull us through. hopefully the pretty cellophaned stacks for the neighbors will remain wrapped til delivered. i realize i am completely running out of time.

which brings me to point number two. do not procrastinate buying christmas dinner groceries, delivering gifts, developing photos or buying stocking stuffers. silly me. i thought i'd wait til the sun comes out to melt this stuff before heading out. looks like that isn't happening anytime soon. so wal-mart here we come. i hate to admit it, but it's the closest store to me and santa loves a onestopshop.

point three. sorry to belabor the point, but if you're coming to visit me, you better have an enormous truck with big burley tires. it's imperative if you want to drive safely in this town. seriously, they have decided to forgo street snow removal altogether and allow snow to simply settle in for a long (and icy) winter's nap. it's every man for himself out there. fortunately our car is small but mighty. dan refers to it as the tank. yes, he has removed the hubcaps again this winter to further give our hyundai it's tank status. i wonder if i have to be a guy to understand.

point four. i did get myself over to the gym saturday after harassing myself about building Cookie Kingdom in my own kitchen. a session of yoga is like sunshine for the soul. i laid on my yoga mat and remembered when i was so pregnant that laying on my belly felt like a million light years away. and there i was sun salutating the saturday morning hello and simultaneously realizing how very weak i am. must keep going to yoga no matter how deep the snow.

point five. i really liked my earthy yoga teacher. she was probably in her fifties and looked not a day older than thirty. tough and buff and knowledgeable. she kept saying to breathe from the belly. and i really attempted to do so. and while her poses were complicated, she said something really interesting that caught me offguard. as the yoga students were bending and stretching and balancing, i was attempting not falling over. she said, even if you cannot reach the deep stretch, visualize yourself doing so. picture in your mind what you want to achieve. mind over matter. yes. i loved that. especially since i am far from yogi perfection. i thought that is good advice. be it a yoga pose or graduating with honors or baking a perfect pie crust or publishing a book or asking for a raise or quitting a bad habit or starting a good one. picture yourself achieving. thank you, miss yoga teacher for serious enlightenment.

point six. holding off on cashing in my september birthday gift, a massage gift certificate, was one of the best procrastinating i've ever done. if you love feeling warm and toasty you will definitely love a hot stone massage. i felt like a stick of butter left in the microwave too long. a perfect feeling for the saturday before christmas. (okay, okay, so i gave up grocery shopping for a trip to the day spa, i realize there are consequences i will have to pay. such as battling the crowds at wal-mart tonight with the rest of the world. the closer christmas comes, the crazier it gets. people will begin to buy anything to stuff under their tree. like shrink-wrapped bottles of cologne. nothing says class like shrink wrap.)

point seven. just as i was getting anxious, feeling like i don't give benji enough tummy time, he decides to go ahead and achieve something all on his own. completely surprising and delighting his mama. yep, someone in our house just learned to roll over! it was the most adorable thing ever and he just decided to show me his new trick like a pro, as if he's been saving it for months. benji is three days shy of turning 4 months old and is the apple of my eye. the sight of christmas lights and brightly colored packages are incentive enough to muster the courage to flip from his tummy to his back. oh my, how great it is to watch him grow and learn. he has figured out how to grasp his rattle and shake it about, causing big benji grins. his eyes are still changing right before my very own. and he has this awesome mini mohawk that reminds me of a pony's mane. i love to stroke it and tell him what a good boy he is. i used to hear the phrase i'm lucky to be his mom from other mamas before i had a baby. i never fully understood. but now i get it. this sweet li'l soul is entrusted to me. he is a bundle of sweet curiosity and goodness and love. i see now how blessed, how lucky, how wonderful it is to call him my own. my favorite gift of all truly did come early this year.

any other gifts are simply the icing on the cake cookie.

from our holiday home to yours, we wish you a beary merry christmas.
xo. marta

my favorite combination greets the season.
like little lucy told me on the phone today, it's only four days away. i love christmas. couldn't agree more, sweetie.

19 December 2008

tell me a story.

i love hearing christmas stories at this time of year and thought we might read one to little benji every night before santa claus comes. since we don't have a shelf full of seasonal storybooks yet, i've found a fantastic christmas collection online with a great library full of printable pages. it is also a tradition to read the true christmas story from scripture. snuggle in and read the nights away. christmas is almost here, i can barely believe it.

happy weekend. enjoy the holiday hustle and bustle. i know i will. i'll be making my final stop to the post office, tying up ribbons, delivering satchels of clementines and getting the stocking stuff stocked. i have one more batch of cookies to make, another party to attend and a little mischief to be done. the last drops of christmasy tunes will be blasting in our home like it will be in yours. i am looking forward to a simple christmas in our new town, just the three of us.

and remember, i don't just give this recipe to anyone. that's how much i love you.

spread light

the glass balls that hang on our humble christmas tree illuminate the twinkle lights. it is so lovely. our baby loves to marvel every time we light up the tree. i think the magic in his big curious eyes is what this season is all about. he gives and gives and gives and loves and loves and loves. i understand better why we need to become more childlike. because therein lies pure goodness.

don't forget.

i finally remembered to re-order my organizer refills and i received 30% off my entire order. if you order today, kate will even ship them out before the new year. happy day.

a sweet christmasy surprise

picked dan up from work friday night.
he said we were going home for the weekend.
surprise. hip hip.
packed up quick.
headed off with polka dot packages
and li'l benj in his fleece penguin sleeper.
cozied in for a long drive.
found a firelit warm place to stay.

woke up to fresh snowfall.
winter wonderland.
had eggs & sausage.
my favorite.
bundled up for a big walk.
in the snow.
downy flurries fell on my lips
and later in my shoes.
decided to make the most of it.
even though i was frozen.
because it was so beautiful.
and dan was so happy.
and benj was so warm.
we hiked and he slept soundly.
like the silent forest we were in.
surrounded in snow blankets.
felt complete peace.

survived.
warmed up.
got ready.
drove to the zoo.
i mean the mall.
hustled & bustled.
smiled a lot.
shopped successfully.
surprises left & right.
ate cafe rio salads.
because they are what i dream of.
the whole weekend was dreamy.
we lit a fire.
drank mugs of chocolate.
chatted with friends.

went to church.
heard violins.
and the first noel.
ate pomegranate seeds.
surprised relatives.
squeezed their hands.
while they kissed benji's cheeks.

hopped from cozy home to home.
with candles lit and trees glistening.
giddily exchanged gifts.
children sat on my lap.
with puppets on the floor.
enjoyed my dad's famous stew.
and my siblings' company.
because there is nothing better.
than living your childhood.
when you're all grown up.

packed up the car.
clicked benji in.
cuddled up.
cried happy tears.
told dan it felt like christmas.
it was that good.
surprises are my favorite.
tis the season.
love someone today.

candyland christmas

thanks for the well wishes. am (hopefully) on the upswing of this cold, but am still croaking instead of crooning my carols. benji looks up with these wide curious eyes, like what did you do with my real mom? am doing my best to get into the christmas spirit. currently we're listening to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker (not only festive but is supposedly improving my baby's brain too). i love multi-tasking. yesterday i braved this september-like weather to run errands. now if hearing children scream in the aisles of toys r us doesn't get you in the spirit, than what will? yes i got out of there as soon as possible and yes i hand sanitized afterwards too. even though i am the germ culprit these days.

i hardly ever browse my blog archives, but this season i have enjoyed looking back and seeing what we were up to last december, before we knew the best gift in the world was on his way.

i was...
going on lots of winter walks.
participating in a wonderful tradition.
baking up a peppermint treat.
and giving gifting advice.

now you tell me, how do you get into the Christmas Spirit?

mini diary on sale.

here is your last chance
(of the year)
to get your hands
on a mini diary.

and it's on sale in my shop.

thank you for ordering.

09 December 2008

4 items of business.

01. yes, it came early this year. i am sick with my annual cold. if that isn't sad enough, my benji bear is sick too. so we're taking it easy and cuddling in our cozy living room just watching the christmas tree lights glow. both of us are mesmerized. we've invited john denver, mariah carey and the oakridge boys to join us. they rock around the tree while we sit and stare and sniffle. it's a real party.

02. i think you'll agree, dan should really guest blog more often. he has been awesome and so helpful with everything. including warming my soup and running out to buy me some much needed orange juice. it's his way of saying feel good soon. he was raised with a doctor for a father, yet the cure-all is still orange juice and cotton socks. go figure. and hey, what's a holiday without Neil?

03. i have yet to come up with anything new & exciting to fill his stocking with this year (dan's not neil's). santa gives him the same simple things year after year. all he wants is one of those big oranges and a pack of beef jerky, he's so easy to please. for more ideas, you may want to revisit the stockings for him list i posted last year. and don't miss the comments, everyone left great ideas...

04. the last of the orders from my shop shipped out today. (again, thanks to dan.) hip hip hooray. if you ordered something, you should receive it by the end of the week. thank you for your business, i feel so lucky to be able to do what i love. i appreciate it so much and have enjoyed getting to know many of you. even on sick days i love wrapping, labeling, packaging and boxing up. seriously, it's been like santa's workshop around here and i even have my own tiny elf overseeing the operation.

Just a Substitute

Hi. This is Dan. Marta is sick today so she asked me to fill in. I'm here to announce the winner of the fuzzy cookie contest.

Who's the big winner? Desiree. Congratulations, you're the big winner. And, you share a name with my third favorite Neil Diamond song. The greatest Neil song of all time is, without a doubt, Holly Holy, followed closely by Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show. While I'm partial to the classics, Neil's 2005 album "12 Songs" had some remarkably good music. Notably Captain of a Shipwreck. If you haven't seen 1980's "The Jazz Singer," starring Neil in the title role and Sir Laurence Olivier as his long-suffering father, you're really only hurting yourself. Not only is the acting absolutely phenomenal (I'm pretty sure Neil won the Oscar for Best Actor that year), but the soundtrack will blow your mind. Check out this, this and this.

Anyway, congratulations on the fuzzy felt cookies. Hope you enjoy them. Email your contact info to Marta and she'll take care of the rest.

I couldn't find a credit for this photo.
My sincere thanks to the unknown photographer who captured Neil at his most radiant.

costume change

benji has entered a fabulous new phase, the 3-6 month wardrobe. it's a whole new world of cuteness. it seems that everyone gives a new mama adorable baby clothes in this size. benji loves to try on everything in his closet, sometimes he wants two costume changes a day. somedays even three! and i don't mind, i did always like playing dress ups. here are a couple of my favorite looks.

my new york doll.

my li'l rockstar.

grocery store stockings

hope this stocking stuff list gets you thinking. sometimes it's the really cheap frills that create a smile. seriously, it's the thought that counts. so remember to stock up when you're picking up a gallon of milk this weekend. come back monday for an especially sweet etsy shop giveaway.

04 December 2008

my boy.

my boy

does the best stretch. i unwrap him from his beloved swaddling blanket and he reaches his arms up, balls his tiny hands into fists and arches his back and raises his eyebrows just so. stretching out. it gets me everytime.

loves being rocked to sleep. he'll fight it with these adoring wide eyes, attempting to fool his mama, hey i'm up, i'm not tired. but mama knows best, so i swaddle him up and rock him and he's out in two seconds. i love that his eyes look big even when they're closed. and his eyelashes. i could sit and count them forever. i've read these books that say don't rock your baby to sleep, but when he's this irresistible, i just can't resist. so i hold him as long as i like.

watches his dad with marvel. when his papa enters the room benji's eyes are like magnets, glued to his every move. it's adorable.

coos so much it's a tiny giggle. i don't think i've ever laughed so much.

twiddles his fingers. like a little scientist hatching a plan, he watches his hands and twirls them about and sometimes finds them in his mouth and gnaws on them. he is already an entertainer.

smiles readily. even when i'm not looking. i'll be making the bed or grabbing my keys or frying up some bacon, and i'll look at him and catch the tail end of a big benji grin. he's such a happy boy. children seem to find happiness in the little things. like the view of his own fingernails.

is camera shy. whenever i whip out the camera to catch one of these big benji grins, he sees the mechanism and goes stone faced. it's pretty hilarious. i'll make him laugh and try to click my camera simultaneously, but he won't let up. he's just like his dad, doesn't want to behave when i'm in shutterbug mode.

has a face that makes me wish i were Rembrandt. i used to take a painting class and spent all my time sketching ordinary apples, oranges and odd things like gas lanterns and animal skulls, objects with shadow and light. now i'd like to study my baby's face for hours and paint it's creamy texture, match his perfect peach hue, sketch the sweet twinkle in his eye and attempt to light it up with his glow.
he illuminates my life.

image by me. letterpress cards by charming elise. (i love them. thank you.) if anyone wants to be benji's penpal, he has some seriously fancy cards for correspondence.

03 December 2008

for the love.

as my mom hung out in a hotel lobby waiting to catch a plane, she and i caught up about our Thanksgivings and life in general. the thing about us is, we can be a million miles away, chatting cell to cell, but we can always have the same old conversation. the familiar old banter. i love the constantness of my mom and how chats with her always get me thinking.

this time she said that she was excited to get home and start her projects. we girls are always big into projects. or at least talking them up and planning for them and organizing them. sometimes the actual project goes to the wayside. but i was intrigued with her plan. she reads and reads and reads. she is an expert on plenty of subjects. a lot of the books she reads are about writing. because we are a family of writers. some of us are wanna-be-writers.

she paraphrased one of the books that quipped that we always have time for our lovers. it's true, you simply MAKE TIME FOR WHAT YOU LOVE. if you love being with your lover, you make time for your love. even if it means going to Sportsmans Warehouse with a big smile on your face. or sitting through an educational tutorial about the differences between a shotgun, a rifle and a revolver. including information about which bullets go with which gun. even if you're not really all that into guns, but your man is.

going on, my mom was quoting that if you LOVE writing you will make time to write. i suppose it's true with any passion. somehow amidst my new-mom lifestyle, i can always find time to blog, to get out and shop for ribbon, to read magazines, to watch a daily dose of Ellen, to sort laundry, to take benji on a walk... but somehow there is just never time to scrub the tub.

so this conversation got me thinking. i want to love something so much that i put it at the top of my list. what do i want to do with life? i have attempted several times to write about my new life as a mama, but i know it'll take some thinking and time slips away and then my babe turns three months old and all the times i've thought oh my goodness that is so cute, i must write that down, i hold it in my heart for a moment yet forget to write it down. i must make more time. or just spend my time more wisely. i write every day but it's hardly stuff that gets down to the nitty gritty. it's hardly what i'd ever want to publish, yet here i am publishing all these wishy washy words that just fall out of my head. it's a bit ironic.

therefore i think i've got to get writing. about things that matter. i want to make TIME for things that are important. get my priorities straight.

on another note, i have signed up for a gym membership. i'm super excited about it. still i feel a bit nervous to work out post-cesarean. but i know once i get back into the groove of it, i'll love it and feel oh so good. i think when you stop doing something for awhile, you lose it and you fear it. but i'm going to go for it. i am meeting with my personal trainer in two hours. eek. am excited. am getting geared up. am starting anew. and i've just stocked my fridge full of vegetables so we're good to go. and am going to write my heart down, i promise. baby steps to my new goals. no more excuses.

three new things i am going to take/make more time for and prioritize in my life. a fresh take. a serious push towards a new me. starting now.

work out.
eat healthy.
write more.

am multi-tasking.

sometimes while i'm supposed to be doing one project (like prancing about hanging decorations and getting the house cleaned and thawing the meat for dinner) i get into another project (like hauling out my crafts and cleaning out my office supply closet and reading old december issues for fresh ideas on what to do with all these decorations and then photographing it and blogging about it.) silly, isn't it? so here, enjoy. back to work.

02 December 2008

bear cub

this thanksgiving weekend, we went on a few fantastic early morning hikes. our baby was oh so cozy in his new fleece outfit (which is on sale now). luckily it's big enough for him to hibernate in the entire season. (hopefully we will get some snow sooner or later. last year we had loads of it, take a glance at my advent picture calendar from 2007.)

uh oh, christmas is coming.

the twinkle lights are up, the tree is in the window glistening with tinsel, the festive wreath is on the door, the stockings are hung, the licorice roofed gingerbread house has been frosted, and dazzling red presents are wrapped and ready. seriously.

no, not at my house, but next door.

it's only december second and i'm feeling a little behind. a new Williams Sonoma catalogue has arrived every week in november, reminding me to hurry and buy some of their peppermint bark before i'm the last one on earth to place my order. i haven't unpacked from our thanksgiving weekend yet! the christmas decorations are patiently waiting, packed in storage boxes.

am turning on some Carpenter's Christmas, opening two doors of my advent calendar, making cocoa and decking the halls. i've got to get busy before another catalogue comes in the mail boasting of seasonal nutcracker suite sheets all tucked in.
